Big Square Balers

I've never had anything to do with big square balers. At some point I noticed that some, maybe all of them, have knotters both above and below the bale chamber. At the time I thought that having them underneath where you can't easily get at them, was as extreemly stupid idea, but then there must be a reason for it. The only reason that I can think of, is that with the number of strings required, the knotters would be too wide to fit side by side. Am I correct. Why not have the knotters on both sides?

No all 6 on top but the twine is fed from the top and the bottom so that the knotter doesn’t have to hold the twine like it does on a small baler
