Shimano spd sl all day long for a road bike especially if you are trying hard (I know @Clive will), other systems have their advocates but the combination of reliability, functionality and value are unbeatable IMO.

I bought Ultegra carbon SPD in the end - so far so good !

need a turbo trainer next I think as the weather / light just isn't great this time of year

Thanks Clive the mention of turbo training has got me decorating. Get a cheap turbo and a power meter. I have always used heart rate which is fine for me, everyone who races uses power these days.

Mrs M has just treated herself to one of these bad boys. Connects to the wi-fi & Google earth and you can go riding anywhere you like it tilts +/- 20% and is flipping hard graft!

Took my nine year old son to the bike show and was not impressed, they totally failed to cater for any rider aged between 6 and 14 and most of the stuff on sale was overprices tatt, and hardly any of the major bike manufactures were there.

Have you looked at Isla bikes? They made bicycles especially for children.

yes they both had Isla bikes as their first bikes, they are great for 4/5 year olds but my two are 7 and 9 now and into bmx racing and downhill mountain bike racing and would have been embarrassed to ride round the little flat kids track at the show, they could have handled the big track there with ease.

Just come across this thread, my best piece of advice on bikes is to get one professionally fitted. Most bike shops are only interested in flogging stock and not getting the best bike for you.
I see the Specialised store in Stafford offers the Retul service which I understand is pretty good.
I am lucky we have a guy locally who does Team Sky’s work. I was shocked at the changes he made and the difference it made
Not cheap mind for a couple of hours work!

I agree entirely on bike fitting i have had two. However call me old school but i prefer the ex pro approach that observes and adjusts rather than Retual system where often its a shop assistant trained to use a computer system.

The perfect solution may well be Retual in the hands of an old school well experianced bike fitter but not many have good words to say about yhe system which might say something

Gary Ford runs the Stafford Specialzed store and was a top World Cup mountain biker, got a bike for my wife from them and she had the bike fit done, it made all the difference
