biomass boilers

Hi
Has anyone got any experience of biomass either log/chip or pellet that they are willing to share.
We are looking at putting in a wood boiler and would like others views on it or any recommendations.
Thanks
Matt

Hi Matt,

I see you are in Herefordshire, I don't suppose you know Nick Helme of Wharton Court near Leominster? He recently installed a big woodchip boiler and seems to be very pleased with it. I am going up there tomorrow so I should see him at some point, when I do I will see what info i can get out of him about it. I know they feed it with a maitou into a hopper which self regulates the feed into the fire and that he runs the main house, Wharton court food centre and cafe, a large workshop with underfloor heating and a mushroom growing plant from it.

disaster of a thing unless you have a company that can survive.

they do run well when properly working and serviced, need a proper source of chip that is properly graded and dried.

worked for a firm for a while and well it was shambles at times. the running hours to deliver chip and the way it was handled and graded! although mainland uk should be better!

Matt,
We have 2 types of biomass that we install depending on the type of fuel you would like to use. Dunsterheat.co.uk provide a vigas boiler which are for smaller logs and dragonheat.co.uk which are for a variety of fuels and generally bulky sizes. If you would like more info give us a call, we are based in Cheshire on Messuage Farm tel 01260 224073 and I'll be happy to help.
Kind Regards

Wood Fuel Testing

The quality of wood fuel is a vital part of ensuring biomass boilers work efficiently. 2 key factors are moisture content and particle size distribution.

Moisture content (MC)

If fuel is too wet then you could be seeing smoke and creating tar caused by incomplete combustion and you’ll be using more fuel than you may expect. You’ll likely be paying for water rather than energy. If the fuel is too dry you could overheat the grate and see premature wear within the boiler.

The common method of MC determination within the wood fuel industry is to use an electrical pin meter. These do not measure the MC directly but rather they measure electrical resistance. They use internal calibration curves to determine MC based on resistance. After many, many months of testing various pin meters against the oven dry laboratory standard (EN14774-2) for MC we have concluded that these can only be used as a GUIDE to moisture. They may work well in a laboratory setting but in real life the readings just aren’t accurate, reliable or repeatable. Sadly there is no simple substitute for determining MC other than using the recognised methodologies.

Particle size distribution

As for particle size of woodchip? Some biomass boilers can be very “fussy” and need chip within a tight specification; otherwise you could be seeing some blockages in the in-feed system. It’s almost impossible to tell what specification wood chip is just from looking at it, and in order to test it specialist equipment is needed.

You should always match your fuel to your boiler.

Hi,
I am posting this to inform anyone with an interest in renewable, affordable heating that I have a Baxi Solar Innova heating system, including two large accumulation tanks for sale. We are moving and the new owners do not wish to take over this system. It is five years old, not used every day because of it's efficiency, properly serviced and professionally decommissioned. Heats a large open plan domestic home and provides full hot water, one burn a day.
If anyone is interested and requires full technical spec email me at [email protected]

Thank you

Hi, these are a few photos of pellet boilers we have installed, the first two are a 130kw pellet boiler and the fuel silo. this feeds heat and hot water to a castle. the third pic is from a domestic 20kw pellet boiler we fitted. both work extremely well.
