Bird flu (avian influenza) has been confirmed on a commercial poultry farm in Warmingham, Chesire East, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has said.
A 3km protection Zone and 10km surveillance Zone has been put in place around the premises. All birds on the infected premises will also be humanely culled.
The Protection Zones require foot patrols around local premises by animal health officers and non-movement of birds within or out of the zone. They do not restrict the movement of people.
Cheshire East Council is taking measures to inform and advise local residents, partners and landowners about the outbreak and what to look out for in birds.
Residents are also being reminded not to touch or pick up any dead or visibly sick birds that they find and to report any dead bird findings to Defra.
While the risk to the wider public from bird flu is low, on January 6,the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) confirmed a case of bird flu in a person in the southwest of England.
According to the agency, the person acquired the infection from very close, regular contact with a large number of infected birds, which they kept in and around their home over a prolonged period of time.
