Bird identification

seen Some birds( que the jokes) in an over wintered ploughed field today. Didn’t fly off just kept running out of the way. They were the size of a partridge with a yellowis/green dappled back, when they eventually flew off the had were very agile flyers,a bit like a lap wing. Any ideas.
