I am paid, under Glastir Advanced, to grow unsprayed root crops (swedes/turnips which I graze over winter and sprays don’t do much anyway), and to sow wild bird seed strips (Barley with a bit of mustard, DD’ed on marginal areas and gate closed). I’ve also got small patches under tree canopies, so excluded for BPS, where I am paid as ‘wood pasture’ instead, which has unlocked payments to defence round the entire ‘land parcels’.
That’s just a few examples of the ‘public goods’ that are being paid for currently, without looking at hedgerow management and such like. Lesley G was claiming that we would paid a higher rate for such things under her proposed scheme, as we can currently only be paid for ‘income foregone’.

Things will be different, that’s for sure, but we won’t necessarily be unsupported in the future......until there’s a change of government and/or policy.

Well, £200 / acre is worthwhile. I was in an earlier ESA scheme which paid f**k all / acre. I recon an equivalent payment of at least £80 / acre is needed to even consider it. I've never bothered with glass tears etc after my hiding with the ESA scheme. Unless it's a substantial amount of money on offer, folks won't bother, I wonder what all the staff in divisional offices will be doing in the future......

Just to point out that glastir rates haven't changed in 15 odd years. So it may have been a percentage of income foregone then but the rate will have fallen in real terms.
I know the fencing rate which was supposed to be 70% of cost has not gone up in that time yet the cost of fencing and materials has gone up considerably.

Absolutely. Fencing rate only just pays for materials now, not any labour or contractor’s charges. I’m leaving some of my GA hedgelaying & fencing undone (OK if you just don’t claim for it) because of it, unless it needs refencing desperately anyway.

The new schemes they are suggesting promise higher rates, which I guess all the contractors will enjoy.....

Glastir paying £3.48 for fencing in Wales and Hls are paying £4.80 in England for a better spec and with a possible supplement of £1 something for extreme fences (unsure what qualifies though)
