Black bean aphids on beans, worth controlling now?

As above. NO flowers left so no risk to bees. Don't normally treat because of this and usually worse on headlands, but these are right through the crop now. Above 10% headland threshold but not there in yet in the centre of field. Plants with big colonies on are really suffering but I guess they are already a lost cause. Is it worth applying an insecticide (aphox?) or not? Likely to go through with second fungicide end of the week (teb plus amistar). Thanks

Should add have a reluctance to apply any insecticides but that reluctance has already caused me a fairly big loss with bydv in winter barley this season.

I do not treat as a rule I have seen ladybird larvae give complete control see picture on the left of this thread
if the beans were sprayed with inscecticide for p and b weaval then thee may be no lady birds

so I would moniter the aphids carefully and if there are plenty of ladybirds then don’t treat

stoppd using general inscecticide on beans 8 years ago do not miss it

Have not treated for pea and bean weevil or bruchid for years and years.

Just to hijack this thread slightly... what is considered a large infestation of bean aphids? Ours are on the rec sheet to spray shortly but im no expert so wouldnt know how many are too many, or what beneficials we have, was out for a wander today and got a few pics in the crop.

the picture on the left had black bean aphid a week before
did not spray and the lady birds did the job for free

imho there is only a need to spray if the farm has previous intensive inscecticide usage for flea beetl autumn aphid and on beans bruchid and weavel controll his descimates the preditors and increases chances of a big build up of aphids

The high winds did ours last weekend, snapped a lot of the leaf area off

Wouldnt say we,d be in the intensive category as we dont grow osr, but the beans will have always had an insecticide. Theyr to spray with fungicide this week anyway so will be going through them.

Routine applications of any insecticide will eventually lead to resistance, happened with fb, only a matter of time before aphids become uncontrollable with insecticide

Look closely if you have a lot of lady birds and lavae leave out the inscecticide
or try a couple of tramlines with out
when we left out the inscecticide it was because we saw complete controll when checking the day before we would have sprayed
when I questioned PGRO about proven yield increases from spraying the evidence was very thin
no case of pea and bean weavel spray paying
from my experience no useful controll of bruchid
and black bean aphid controlled by lady birds that crop had no previous inscecticide
if you have sprayed out the ladybirds earlier in the season they will not be able to help

Not having a dig at all, but it’s the ‘we are going through anyway, let’s chuck some insecticide in’ that has got us into the resistance problems we now have. Often it is an agronomist covering their arse, but doesn’t make it right.
