Black oat seed

I'm thinking of planting a black oat cover crop. A brief look on the internet suggests the seed costs around £2/kg which seems outrageously expensive. Is that what I should expect to pay?

No.

They are around £1.50/kg maybe less for a reasonable quantity.

I can find you some oats and call them black, any colour you want actually, if thats what tickles your fancy and charge you a wee bit less than £1500 tonne!

What would the advantage of black oats be over just buying a ton of normal oats of a merchant and sowing them.
Edit. apart from the obvious of a higher mark up for the bloke selling them.

That would make a nice road trip/weekend break, but not finished harvest yet!

I have stopped using black oats. Normal spring oats grow really well as a cover crop and much cheaper

Black/Japanese oats said to give better root growth than common oats -whether that is worth the extra cost is unclear,especially given the uncertain profitability of cover crops.
