Just had a call and was offered a "lot" of black solider fly larvae.

Can anyone give me a quick summary of the product and its use? Of all the random calls I have had, this is well up there for @Farmdeals

It's the future ........

As soon as we are allowed to, going to set up a hatchery for these critters as a protein source for our cows.
At present in the UK, you can "feed" the larvae to humans but not to animals thanks to BSE

Dutch are going big on these already

In a previous life, I used to run a BSF farm. The issue has always been in order to scale production you needed to make an enormous leap in scale and cost of the facility. It's only recently that has started to happen. Then there is feedstock, there is no such thing as free food waste in the UK because anything with a feed value can end up in a bio-digester and that sets the floor.

What you are more likely to see initially is a premium line of chicken or farmed fish that is fed on insects and over a couple of years as economies of scale grows and legalisation relaxes you'll see it become used as a mainstream soya replacer.

You could easily feed them as is to fish, might be harder for poultry because of scale.

There's a feller I follow on fb always keen to show off his carp growing, which amuses me slightly because you can grow carp in a muddy puddle you fertilise with cowshit, but its people like that would love this kinda thing.

I read the ad for Business Development Manager and double checked my calendar to see if it was April first! Never heard of Black Soldier Flies but as I delved deeper and deeper I began to feel rather like Alice, having fallen down the rabbit hole.

I came across a quote from 'Masanobu Fukuoka'

The ultimate goal of farming is not the growing of crops but the cultivation and perfection of human beings!

Will someone pinch me please!

And I'm wondering
where the protein for 'SLIM FAST' is sourced from!
