Went to a&e last night and had a tetanus jab and on antibiotics, still need my food cutting up but I'm getting better.

What AB's do you get on with if allergic to penicillin?

Good luck with it, better safe than sorry near a joint/s or they'll be collateral damage.

Reviving this as I got stuck today on my index finger knuckle though so pair of gloves. Noticed about 10 mins later and pulled the splinter out.

That was around midday. It's bloody sore now on two knuckles and I can't grip much at all now.

Do I wait untill morning and see how it is or spend the night sat at waiting to get seen at a&e

pre anti biotics, blackthorn infection, could only be 'cured' by amputation, it's a particularly nasty infection, pretty drastic 'cure', but there was no other option, if the poison started to spread.
A timely warning that a/b resistance is rising. The answer is still the same, if a/b cannot stop it.

I remember helping grandfather fixing a hole in a hedge and a blackthorn went in the back of his hand. When we got to the house he tried digging it out with a needle but didn't get as much out as he thought. Three weeks later he had a pus filled spot on his elbow, which he burst and out came the pointy end of the thorn.

I’m not saying it would have helped the op but I’ve found neat tea tree oil good for turning a infected cut or thorn, I quite enjoy digging them out and rub oil in hard, clean finger obviously

is it high colour? red and maybe increasing .area or is it stable now ? still spreading is what you need to watch for.
the jiont(s) will be sore anyway now and after it s better so thats not so much to go on by way of judging seriousness imo.
Its the red (still) spreading is the bad bit to be watching
by morning you would know what way its going to go .

soon as can after doing it nowadays i put the whole hand foot or whatever to soak in warm water and detol even if its like shutting the satble door after..... to a point its still worth it i reckon.

of course goes without saying im no doctor 😐

Back when I made this thread the blackthorn was removed but the swelling and lack of motion in my wrist stayed for a few weeks, I had to change how I was swinging a hammer then that gave me tendinitis in my elbow and screwed my shoulder up, had to strap my arm with athletic tape to hammer and have sports massages to relieve the tension in my back.
All for a black thorn

Went to walk in clinic... just closed. A&e is currently in a state of emergency so think gp or walk in clinic tomorrow is the best thing.

This had confirmed why blackthorn wont be included in the 500 metres of new hedges I'm planting this month!

Slightly off topic. When I was a boy I was fencing with my dad through a patch or gorse. His arm swept up the next day and he assumed it was a gorse needle . It went down a few days later and never thought about it again . About 5 years later he went to doctor with a lump in his chest . Was sent for surgery next day , they pulled out a bit of barbed wire ! It had gone in his arm and travelled all the way to his chest over the years !
He/we were all relived that’s what it was obviously

why is blackthorn so bad?
Can Blackthorn make you ill?

It isn't all good news with blackthorn, though.
If you pr*ck your finger on one of the tree's enormous thorns you can get 'blackthorn poisoning', which causes infection, swelling and joint pain.
the bark and thorns at this time of the year are exuding small quantities of plant toxins known as cyanogenic glycosides, notably hydrocyanic acid (HCN, aka prussic acid), "one of the most toxic of all plant compounds. ... The occurrence of cyanogenic glycosides is widespread. Amygdalin and prunasin are very common among plants of the Rosaceae, particularly the Prunus genus".

Off topic again, I've got a chip off a bearing in my arm that ,on the x-ray was too close to nerves to risk operating on. The consultant said there's every chance it will move over time and could cause more trouble, but equally could be there for forty years.

Do get it checked in the morning. A friend had a thorn go deep when she fell backwards onto it, became infected and she ended up having 3 operations over the space of 18 months.
Do tell the hospital aswell, when I went in, no one seemed to know what blackthorn was and how toxic it can be, they also treated it like a normal wood splinter and said it would break down.

A lot don't know about farming related problems. Ask a doctor how to treat orf, most haven't heard of it. Took my some to minor injuries in town and there we were waiting for an hour for three doctors trying to work out how to remove a tick from a rambler's neck.
