Blench cultivator

Hi

I am looking something like a Blench cultivator and have found a few different ones online. Ellis’s have one that has wide points but all others I have seen have standard narrow points. What is standard? Do other types of point fit the pigtail?

Ideally I want a fairly high disturbance cultivator for running on stubbly disced ground with the aim to be opening up the stale seed bed and achieving another BG chit.

I have a set of NZs on hire but the tines are to close together.

Generally i would say a standard pig tail has C shaped points varying from 1-3inches wide (not winged). I always run ours on 2.5inches and reckon its fairly good. Neighbour has a wide folding cousins version with 4 rows of tines for wide spacing and a levelling rake on the back and I rate it as a good tool.

I have an ancient 4.5m Blench pigtail here, bought new a very long time ago. It is a frame that’s built like a blue brick outhouse with generic 1” pigtail tines mounted on it.
I have 3” points on it, but you can get lots of different shapes and sizes to fit. I’d imagine it would take some horses to pull it with wider points on at any depth though. It’s been used as a chisel plough in the past and sometimes has to run with the wings up (3m) with 160hp on the front.

It's certainly capable of ‘high disturbance’ cultivation, but maybe not ideal for getting a chit on the surface. I’d prefer something shallow with wings (like a Kongskilde Delta or equivalent) instead for that job.

Hello - sorry just seen this post. To confirm - yes, other types of points will fit the pigtail that is on the Blench and they are not very expensive. https://www.ellismachinery.co.uk/product/blench-12ft-cultivator-11010974

You can get sweep points to fit 1" pigtail tines. I used to use them on a pigtail tine drill and still use bourgault adaptors on the drill. Big points though can be very hard on 1" tines if going straight into uncultivated ground.

When we still used a pigtail tine for cultivation, I wanted to try the twisted points, but never got round to buying a set.
