Good news for you is she a 1st calver?
What’s the mothers breeding?
What gestation do you seem to get?
Do you weigh your calves when there born?
Yep, first calver. She's by an Allacott bred bull out of a Doncombe bred cow.

Just looked back at last years records and we averaged 292.75 days last year, range was from 282 to 304 days. But I only had dates for 8 cows. Have got more service dates hopefully this time so will get a better picture later in the year.

Don't normally weigh, tend to guesstimate usually. Did put this calf over the scales this morning and she came in at 41kg. My guess of 35kg was a bit out 🙈 Going to put a few more over the scales I think from now on.

Good effort for a heifer then at 41kg.
Have you used the Eddie bull before?

Iv been weighing my calves for last 5 years now and it’s helped a lot to avoid the huge calves as they just get culled out the herd. I find Lims are the worst, the breeders claim easy calving, most figures are very fake and just causes headaches and put out 50-60kg calves each time. The only place for them is a one way ticket!

That ain’t too bad an average we have about 10/15% over the 300 days here.

Oh right, might have to pop over for a visit. Tbh I've never actually been to Shenton's. Have they got 2 of Abbie's bulls then? I'm sure they had another Joiner son off her a while ago.
Only the one now. They missed out by a few days on buying the one that went to AI. So they bought the other one. Then when the AI station was done with him they bought hima and moved the other one on.

Does the blonde society not ask for calf weights at birth ?

Do you think the polled is the way forward with blondes?
Are much pedigree breeders now going down the polled route?
I’d certainly like more polled breeding cows and calves around the place would make life a heck of a lot easier.
I was in Denmark at a agri show about 10 years ago.
They had polled blondes.
But their confirmation was poor.
Looked up a uk breeder with some as well.
Their bull was nothing sparkling.
Not sure what they crossed them with in past to get the poll, but took lot of meat with it...

I’m sure they have improved them within the last 10 years surely. I’d say most polled cattle 10 years ago we would of avoided using but the market is getting a bigger % of polled bulls at sales which means there must be a market for them.
Which UK breeder was it? I’d like a polled stock bull if he is worthy enough.

Would anyone perhaps know the name of this bull? I’d been sent this photo a while back and I was amazed by him I actually think he’s the best blonde bull Iv ever seen! So if I could get a name for him if he’s still alive or semen available from him?

Pretty sure thats Allacott Herbert. Bred by David Skinner. Bought by Geoff Rodgers of Hillhead Livestock. Geoff has done very well with progeny in the show ring (and sale ring). He took an on farm jump.
I have used semen off him once and this is the result from a Maverick heifer.

Looks a very good young bull you’ve bred. Was he easily calved?
You won’t have a problem finding him a home! Is he for sale?

I had to calve him with the jack. Once the head popped out it took the full length of the vink. Just enough for a heifer that was probably in too good a condition. September born so heifer was at grass all summer.
He is for sale, might well go to the Society sale at Dungannon in March. (I want to get my new stock bull home settled and proven working before then - otherwise Rodeo could do a job on about half the herd).

Maybe not the bull to blame then but good effort for a heifer. Would you use him again? Is semen available to buy off him?
I don’t blame you as you’ve not had much luck with bulls hopefully this new one will bring you plenty luck!
Have you any other bulls coming through for sale?

I would surely use Herbert again. Although not on a heifer. Not saying someone else shouldnt use him on heifers - Geoff Rodgers did successfully but his cows are bigger then mine. I would use him on Maverick cows - serious growth with flesh and correctness. I have another 9 straws..... but chuck in Ballygowan Noble, Ashtonlodge Tyson, Budore Donald and Utah, Ark Maverick and Baltra Icemen im often lost as to what to use.
I will PM you Geoff's mobile number. I was looking for a link to his website but cant find it I think social media has taken over.

That’s good to hear. Hopefully you get more decent offspring from him!
Which bull would you say is the best or most consistent breeder you’ve ever used?
You’ve got some good decent bulls in your flask! Have you ever used anything with Seaview Barney? (A son or himself).
That would be great thanks very much.

Whistley Dollar is the bull that has consistently proven himself over the years on many different blonde cows.

I couldnt afford Barney straws. Think the vendors were looking £250 a straw and i never seen anyone else who bought them bring out anything of note. I have semen off Ashtonlodge Tyson the sire of Barney and use him now and again. My youngent bull I showed recently was out of a cow by Tyson - Tyson was a great cow maker.
I used Stonlea Inzagi (Barney son) on a cow and kept the heifer calf. She is nothing to look at and kept for the different bloodline. She has had one heifer by Maverick which is better than her and presently incalf to O My. Will probably cull her when I have more Maverick heifers calved.

I have seen him in a lot of pedigrees. I’m guessing there can’t be much semen left from him. What would be the better of the new modern bulls available for use today?
Have you a good few cows by Tyson?
That’s crazy money for semen! Is he a breeder? He certainly looks good to look at.
What’s your current number of breeding cows and followers at?

Im going to give a diplomatic answer and say it depends on your cows. There is no silver bullet and you sorta have to take your chances.

Only one cow by Tyson now.

Im running 30 head. Around 10 breding cows, some calves at foot. 2 or 3 incalf heifers. 4 or 5 maiden heifers and a couple of young bulls.

Ok maybe a better question for you would be what breeds would you put a blonde bull over and what breeds wouldn’t you? I have almost every breed here. Blue X, Pure Lim, Lim X, Sim X, Char X, Saler, AA pure, AA X, Her X, SH X and pure Sussex to give you an idea. I do now have around 380 head of breeding cows with 90 incalf heifers and 120 maidens to follow. Iv got 15 stock bulls currently. But always buying and sometimes sell a few of them. We also try to A.I 10% but going to try 15-20% this year.
That’s a good number is that enough to run a stock bull and A.I?
