Took a trundle in yesterday.

I`m signed up for "Our future health" so my paperwork goes in a special poly folder. :)

Into the room for the iron test, sample is a bit slow to sink, so onto the machine of dread.

Scored 134............. acceptable limit is 135.

Home you go.

No biscuits.
Mrs Y gets rejected from time to time, 3 I think, and then aok next time. Me, ok so far, Apr 10th will see us in the chairs.

I had that once and had to see the GP. They did do a blood test but nothing showed so just suggested more red meat and Guinness. So now in the week approaching a donation it's stout and steak!

I'm a neonatal 0- rr so my blood is very much in demand. Does mean if I ever need a transfusion I'm screwed.

Sorry to hear that. I had the same thing happen a couple of years ago. Felt like I'd let the team down., had to have a couple of months off too.

I bought one of those Easylife finger pr*ck monitors that can check iron, cholesterol, or glucose depending on what strip you put in them. There's a certain degree of variation on those if you do a series of them (especially in lower temperatures), much like if you do blood pressure readings in a row. Not sure if it's device, technique, something else of a combination of factors. £50 ish was reasonable for something that got me to look at my health a little closer. Whilst the blood screening could do 3 tests in the machine it would be at three times the cost, and there has to be a line.

There's not much you can do. Eat lots of steak and brocolli, drink lots of fluids, keep warm, avoid coffee, daily tablet with iron in....

You'll be back in due course, and they will be glad to see you.

Ditto the steak, really easy to fry up first think in the morning. I leave the stout till day after donation though.

One of the idiots commented adversely on the Cheshire Rural Crime Team's page about a pictured officer wearing an O- minus arm patch, and I just wanted to give the muppet a good slap and an explanation of blood types. Neonatal even better!

Wife’s had multiple calls last few months that they are in need of donations, she and Her family regularly attend but cannot find any appointments either locally or at a time She could make without a day off. Guy on the phone chuckled and said he would find one for Her but soon agreed He could see what she meant.

she took the morning off last week for an appointment locally, but They cancelled by text an hour before. Can’t help but wonder if the reason They may be so desperate currently is due to whoever is organising it?

I've heard people around here make the same comment but it's been about the mobile whole blood collection. I'm not sure if it applies to whole blood collection at a centre (which may or may not be practical for you). Certainly for platelet donation at Stoke, I've been rung by them and offered a cancelled slot a week or so in advance, and asked if I could turn up a couple of hourse earlier so they can squeeze someone else in, which I've been happy to do so there is good practice in the system too. I wonder if the mobile whole blood system being necessarily predominantly automated is part of the problem.

I've also had the problem mentioned above where an automatic "central" text was received to say my appointment has been cancelled, which I honoured, and was then asked by the same "central" text system if I could return to donation. I suspect this is a known problem - when I received another one, I checked with the donation centre and they told me to ignore it and turn up because they needed the donation so I did so. If you get that again, ring up and check (presumably the central number for mobile whole blood).

But yes, I understand your frustration. That's why I point people to platelet donation instead if it's possible for them. More reliable, can do it more often. Just need them to check things like your platelet count and vein suitability (best done at a platelet centre as not all mobile whole blood staff can assess).

Would you explain that further please? Not understood.

The comment suggested that the arm patch shown below was an ego trip borrowed from the military, offering no real benefit.
Knowing that there is potentially a O- donor available in an emergency is useful, it will still get checked before use.

Ah, right. Makes sense having that info available. I agree with ollie about police looking more and more like paramilitaries. Don't like it at all.
