That may be your impression, but it’s not mine. I have some limited sympathy with him as I do with anyone who has a grievance with paying over money to third parties, but I have none with the methods he employed to win his case. I also find his faux sympathy with those he slandered and ultimately made jobless nauseating. Perhaps I’m overly sensitive to such matters, but I don’t think he did himself any favours.
As for Spud learning from him, that’s surely laughable. Up to the eyes in debt and evidently unable to manage/ delegate to his team; working as a slave for the supermarket buyers - is that really a model to want to copy?
I think you are a little unfair. Reading what @White rabbit has written in this thread on how the family business was built from humble beginnings I take my hat off to him. He has achieved more than I have.
The information that is held in the public domain would also indicate that the business has been moving forward successfully over many years. Not quite the picture you paint.

I stand by my analysis, and would cite the old mantra of turnover vs profit. It's not fair to discuss it publically, but the accounts are not as healthy as you suggest and his own claim of trivially low profit on turnover backs that up - I only hope for his sake that the £multi million debt he holds is on fixed interest.
I don't expect to be putting in the hours of graft that he claims to be when I'm his age either, and certainly not when he obviously resents doing so.

what a load of rubbish highland mule this farm is one if not the most profitable veg enterprise in south Lincolnshire , adding back depreciation we always make around half a million. The value of this farm is put at 10 million any borrowing is completely for investment like the new self propelled cabbage harvester on order costing £650,000, I do not resent one moment of the hours I put in quite the opposite, like an gof said we came from humble beginnings and I spent my entire life getting to this stage and I want to hand it over to my three daughters and son who all work in the office and do all the extra trading which goes towards investment. Maybe I will give you an aerial shot of the farm.

I stand by my analysis and also my desire not to discuss publically, but seriously? You need to add back the depreciation to get to a profit of £500k, and yet one machine alone will have more than a third of that value itself?
I seem to recall you citing a 1% profit margin on turnover of a shade under £10M earlier in this thread. Now my calculator may have broken but I don't see that equalling your claims now.

I've just closed a family business partnership down and all the machinery was worth about 2-3 times its book value, and that was at pretty conservative valuations too. In cash terms everything was worth at least what we paid for it, in some cases more.
I guess the kit had significant age about it?

It was a mixture of stuff bought new, and more 'classic' stuff, though all in regular use, and fully functioning.

I have no need to fiddle the books, highland mule shall we clear your concerns firstly,I said add back depreciation because of the huge amount of investment we have been doing over several years, even this year we will be investing over a million pound in that harvester and automatic planter , I have to admit the trading my family do is a big help , today 9 containers of foreign produce were traded which is a pretty normal day, I get the impression you think I am not up to the task so how come I am farming 3,000 acres when I started with 18 , I could borrow 4 million from my bank if I needed it so somebody must think I know what I am doing( how much could you raise).Always handy to be able to fiddle the books to show a profit ocassionally.

I attended the Eurofins Blight trials event earlier in the week. I noted there was no AHDB Potatoes presence at what is a quite important event. Previous times I have attended over the years there would have been a stand and staff presence. Interesting.
Correction - just recalled I did see a Knowledge transfer person at one of the manufacturers stands.

Why would there be? Some people voted for them to be disbanded, which means that AHDB Potatoes essentially is no more. No good thing, imho

What’s occurring now, screen shot below from David Handley/FFA Facebook page, seems AHDB are re witting the rules so dairy farmers can’t follow the potato/horticultural sector
so what exactly is being changed?
I would have thought it would be rather difficult to make significant changes as that would require a change to the Statutory Instrument which would require parliamentary time.
