Weren’t you supposed to be meeting the outgoing head this month anyway? You were boasting about that a few pages ago I think.

As to timing, I’d say that within 3-5 months would be a reasonable expectation. These things take time to organise and get the right arrangements in place.

That's why we didn't met him he was going in the wrong direction like he'd give a damn.He is busy doing what you livestock chaps do now.

He's busy counting his money, god knows he has taken enough of mine.
As the old saying goes, if you can’t beat em, join em.
Perhaps you need a change of direction but you might find the grass isn’t greener on the other side of the fence.

Tarw Coch a change of direction might look appealing its just not an option, our neighbour has just made that decision. He has drilled all his own land and dropped all the rented he was almost the same size has ourselves, which will leave very few large scale veg grower /packers in south Lincolnshire, like I have mentioned before I have lost count of how many we have lost over the last 15 years,in my own situation I employ 24 full time staff and 100 agency workers sometimes 120 which if I made a similar decision would mean a lot of people probably without a job not a very nice prospect in these times ,not to mention all the companies supplying us , we use a lot of small and one man companies and estimate we put 7million back into our local economy,so even though it is a lot of work for a small return you keep hoping things will improve, you never know when we leave in December they might even begin to appreciate British farmers and pay us a little more or maybe I am delusional.

I fully understand that, some days I feel all the hassle ain’t worth the return.
I’m not on the scale you are with only one part time employee who’s almost like family and I’m sure if I called time on the job she would be the most devistated both from a work and financial point of view.

The point is, the grass ain’t necessarily greener on the other side of the fence, there will be plenty of livestock farmers who understand that the work and finances employed in the job aren’t allways reflected in the returns they get.
Your portrayal of livestock farmers as somehow being in a far better place than you isn’t winning you any allies in that sector when in reality you probably have far more in common than you realise.

ok Tarw coch but don't take my comments on your sector to seriously,I am known has a bit of a wind up merchant,I know all sectors in farming are finding it hard going and will continue to find it hard going for the foreseeable future.I have just been talking to a potato grower on the west side who is getting £15 a ton from McCain take it or leave it they are really up against it,this is why we are trying to unburden ourselves of these quangos we simply cannot afford them,we have so many people other than the ahdb taking our money, red tractor, assured produce ,brc, field to fork, sedex you name we have to have it,one of these comes to audit us for two days at a cost of £1000 a day we have to put her up in a nice hotel overnight and she even has the cheek to put a full evening meal on our bill.

Are spuds that low now
I was talking to a spud grower a couple of months back, I thought his McCain contract was better than that although hardly providing a decent return this year and the spuds he was selling on the open market were worse, losing him about £600 ton.
He was trying bagging some but as his main market was bulk he didn’t have a particularly efficient bagging line so that wasn’t particularly well paying either

He was on a open contract, not a good move this year but who knew all this was going to happen. The early chaps were told to dump the seed ,(at least McCain buy the seed) and they paid £200 an acre compensation, this still leaves a pretty hefty shortfall ,I am not sure what rent they pay but main crop around here is up to a £1,000 an acre so they could be paying 3 or 400.He went on to say that McCain had enough par fried chips in coldstore to last to the middle of next year.

Yes, I remember him saying something about them buying the seed , he also said there was something about the seed they’d provided, can’t remember what exactly but it was something along the lines of was poor yielding, poor disease resistance or something, certainly not a variety which he would grow by choice.
I’m sure he also said they take the spuds to Holland to be made into chips then send them back again, that must be good for food miles.

Tarw Coch I understand there is a lot of potatoes that go to Holland and come back in one form or another, but they also send a lot of their potatoes over here mainly has par chlps. Now I have a lot of respect for the Dutch and their innovative culture but surely can we not manage to make our own chips ,I wouldn't have thought you would need the help of a rocket scientist, back to the comment I made earlier about leaving in December one would hope things like this would become less attractive,or is the talk of 7,000 lorries stuck in Kent only for goods leaving I have heard nothing of lorries being stuck on the other side of the channel.

morning Simon w we are taking these 121 names down Tuesday afternoon and straight away moving on to potato sector ,a lot of growers are feeling pretty fed up and we are not going to wait for the ballot,if potato growers do not help us in such a disastrous year they never will .We have been asked to meet Nicholas saphir which I personally would like to do but my two partners do not so I am out voted .I think they are scared I might get out of my pram.
