Blower pipes

Just been told by the feed lorry driver that there is a hole in the blower pipe of our bin, just past the first bend where it gets to the top. Obviously, or perhaps hopefully, I can get a replacement from EB, but has anyone found a stronger / harder wearing replacement? It's been seven years, I think I'll have to hire a cherry picker to get up there, and I'd rather leave it a bit longer next time!

How long has it lasted?

Must be high, sounds like a pain to get up there otherwise I’d suggest a piece of tin and some large jubilee clips as a short to medium term fix.

My preference too if it were easier to get to, although as the hole enlarges under the tin there would be pieces of pipe breaking off and getting in the feed, which I wouldn't want.
Just off to ring EB. It looks like the piece from the top of the straight pipe up the side, all the way over the top is one piece, so could be expensive.

What was EB's reply? Have had the second double boot for the centreless augers wear through today, just over 3 years of use, will replace with collinson galv steel boot.

@MickMoor can you do replacement blower pipes for EB bins?

Had bend go on our EB bin, think it would have been similar tonnage. Got a local fabricator reinforce a bend with some 10mm strip metal and weld which is sticking it fairly well considering there is well over 1000t a year going through it now.

They were very helpful, yes those bends wear out, yes we supply a replacement for that bend, rather than the whole up and over piece, we'll send it right away. The second bend into the bin wears eventually, but I might get two or three of the first bend, before the second bend goes, as the first bend takes most of the force, not helped by having a 30 ft high bin, so the feed needs a bit of Welly to get it in.
I don't remember any pipe wearing out on our old loft which was used for 25 years, albeit with not such great volumes going through. I know it would be expensive, but there must be a harder steel to use on the bends, just thinking about the wearing parts on cultivation machinery shows it is possible.
Thanks for all replies, the cost btw is £65 for the bend, and £35 each for two collars to connect it in, plus carriage and £75 for a cherry picker for a day. I just feel happier doing it by the book, I would worry about a tyre working loose for example. Cheers

Auger boots fine btw, the cows got to the bagging off chute when they got out, which is also in need of replacement, but I can't blame the manufacturer for that!

I’ve just done an EB bin, if your going up up there do both elbows while your there, I made that mistake last time, I’ve since taken the old ones to local fabricator and he’s plated it up twice as thick so next time we change it should be for good

Yes it's possible to get thicker wall pipe, but it adds weight and then different brackets and support,, is yours internal or external pipe work. We had both from EB external easier to work on obviously, you might think if an internal pipe wears through it won't be a problem, but it is, it tends to blow the food straight back out through the vent.

External. They didn't tell me about the thicker option. Think I'll fit the one I've ordered, and see if the local engineer can improve on the old one. Thank you
