I had a ewe die today (she was ok 5pm last night) and when we saw her at 11am she was not only half eaten but covered in blowfly! Maggot season is approaching then so time to get some preventative's in!

Anyone else seen blowfly?

I was shutting the birds in just now, and heard one of the ewes banging her head against the ark, so was thinking that they will need treating.

What does everyone use? Last year I had to react by using Crovect, but want to get them early this year. I've got a particularly wild bunch of Wiltshire Horns who hate being handled!

TBH I always think of blowfly as being seasonal as opposed to temperature related.

What I mea by that is that we seem to never ever see fly strike until well into June or July.

I think it has something to do with humidity and not just high temperatures.

It'd only be 14-15 here?
Because of our humidity we get blowfly usually from early April until November, because of the rain last week it kept them at bay - or we didn't have anything dead then so didn't notice?

We've finished trimming all backsides on the ewes now apart from what's lambed in the last 3 days, once the ewe lambs have finished they'll be in for a trim too!

Clik is what we use I think? Used to be Vetrazin for cover and Crovect on an outbreak back in 2006 when I last did sheep work!

Been using dysect here last couple years, happy as preventive & treatment.

Our cleansings from the lambing shed go into a covered front-end loader bucket before disposal. These have been struck this week(n)
Mrs YB went to the kennels with a dead ewe the other day and reported seeing blowflies buzzing round the bins of waste outside the flesh house - looks like the 'season' is upon us:(

But respect to Mrs Y B! Mrs MIB is non farming and I've been made up with her cade bottle ability this year but I think a trip to knackers would be pushing it!

She's a star (sshh - don't tell her I said that, she'll be after a pay rise). Comes from a 400 year line of farmers but she desperately seeks out one of the hunt staff when she gets there 'cos she's not over keen of the 'thump' when they hit the ground if she has to drag it out of the pick up herself:eek:

Is that not high protein dog tucker? I'd have to lift the bucket right up to stop my dogs finding a way to it.:hungry:
My dog is a barsteward for eating cleansings hence the fitted bit of board in front of the bucket 'cos the old blokes always told me if they ate too many it wasn't good for their eyes. Is that just an old wives tale then:scratchhead:

If MrsYB can't find a cleansing in a pen she always calls for the services of the 'sniffer dog', as she calls her, who soon roots 'em out:)

Because you seem to farm in a different planet to many, in terms of climate.;)
It was still frosty here this morning when I was on first lambing rounds, and I'm hardly exposed or high up.;)
@Al R farms down on the south west coast of pembs from what I can gather. It's got a micro climate of its own down there and would be as early as Devon or Cornwall. Temps of 20 degrees here yesterday even so I can well believe they have blowfly down there in pembs. Fantastic place to farm though I'd imagine.
