Elanco have been tracking the blowfly season for over 5 years and have seen that the start can fluctuate year on year and can even vary considerably across different areas on the same farm. Blowflies are dependent on soil temperatures rising above 9 degrees Celsius. Over the last few years, the first reported cases of strike has varied from April to early May. As a result, it is always important to act early and use a preventative as soon as the weather starts to warm up.

To report a case of strike so that farmers and the wider industry can be prepared is simple – click the button below to use the online reporting form. Alternatively you can contact your Elanco representative or email [email protected] with details of blowfly activity on your farm.

Update -

The whole of the UK is now at either HIGH or SEVERE risk of fly strike

NADIS, in collaboration with Elanco, have once again launched the blowfly risk alert to help farmers and prescribers keep up-to-date and stay aware of the blowfly challenge throughout the season. Elanco encourages farmers and prescribers to report a case of strike on the blowfly tracker to help others be aware of the risk in their local area and across the country.

Professor Richard Wall from Bristol University comments "A large and growing blowfly population and w arm wet summer weather create the perfect recipe for high fly risk, particularly for lambs. Early in the year most strikes occur around the back end of sheep - but as the season progresses the risk of body strike grows - so care is needed to look out for the early signs and treat it quickly"

However, there have been several reports of fly strike on the Elanco Blowfly Tracker www.farmanimalhealth.co.uk/tracker, so shepherds should remain vigilant for clinical signs, and report them through our website https://alerts.nadis.org.uk
