Blues on jersey crosses

We're using blue bull/ Hereford as sweeper bulls, if you're gonna use blue Ai you need the bull to be pure white or you will get black calves.
Funny you shoud say that. I remember the guy who used to take our stock to market one morning he had some really cracking young bulls in the front of his wagon. They were Blues out of Jersey dairy cows and they were as black as an Angus!

The problem is as soon as you find something good they are either not producing or dead. Happened to us with umpire and now Anderson.

Bulls like Heartthrob (admittedly only after 10 calves) are heading to the very easy calving which is great but you are left with something which is not going to look great through the market as a calf.

Bit ranty but to be honest I am just frustrated.

Heartthrob is currently leading the beef advantage Genus table being the most profitable sire - I am really surprised you don't think the calves aren't going to look great - we've used that female family for years and bulls from them across a flying mixed herd, including Jerseys and Jersians have been pretty good - big, strong calves. Our stirks regularly top the market at Sedgemoor. That said, if you want to use a sire which will give you bigger calves, Cogent's NewPole Icon might be the way to go but they will be big. Same dam line as Heartthrob but sire is Tamorn Sumo.

For future reference, anyone looking for a very, very correct, very shapely little bull to go across Jerseys, get in touch - Pippa White (daughter of partner in Blues) has a stunning, admittedly all black, baby bull who I don't think will be big enough but superb for a Jersey herd. Out of a daughter of our renowned Blossom (@Henarar will confirm that she is an amazing natural calving cow) he won't be expensive and I am pretty sure will do an ace job.

For those in Ireland, we've just sold a cracking young bull called Lancelot to the National Cattle Breeding Centre - out of N. Easy's dam, Uvita by a bull we think a lot of, Tilouis d'Atrive. He's blue and white but not dark blue. We've two other calves by the bull on the ground, one is white, the other white with a little blue, so his dominant colour is white for sure. Also got a cracking white bull calf by Tilouis' son, Zougar - might be worth noting ?

It's not think. Our first batch of Heartthrobs are on the ground. I'm not saying he is a bad bull but his calves were in the same pen as Anderson and Umpire calves which was probably Heartthrobs downfall.

They are all growing and thriving but a couple of the Heartthrobs were small calves and a couple were stupidly small. Long term they will be fine but if you are looking to sell as calves through the market then not so great.

As I said we only have ten calves on the ground and he may not suit our heard. I have seen people in the past recommend Flintoff on here (now dead) which was probably the worst BB we have used, so not every good bull is good for every herd, possibly.

You're absolutely right - some will work better than others according to herd, for sure! We've contract flushed for Genus for a while, now - used Umpire on Uvita and hated the resulting bulls! Just not good enough. We've used sexed male semen supplied by Genus on various of our white cow families so you'll soon see combos of Anderson, Dev and DJ over our cows coming on stream soon!! Hope some work for you. We think our job now, though, is to source new white bulls that do an even better job over dairies - some work, some don't but genetics don't remain static,

@Henarar - yep, the old girl is still pottering on - we flush her every so often as we do Uvita... Got a baby heifer same way bred as that big heifer we lost, Japonica and also a baby bull calf not long born. Only her second bull ever! Plus two other daughters have ped calves at foot, both heifers, dark blue and white, one by Fleuron and the other by Artaban. Very pretty !

Glad she is still ok and even if she wouldn't flush any more remember you can have one pet cow ;):)(y)
