A year on and our Heartthrob calves have grown and actually look really well, picked out three to go with the bull. Won't be a repeat purchase for us as we like to sell as calves but he definitely deserves his place in the brochure based on what we now have.

How did you find calving ease?

I really think blues are fekin' stupid but always very quiet.

I have 35 blues out of jerseys going to St Merryn this month . They are a bit of a trial as an income stream where Tb status doesn't matter. They are 28/29 months and have had no hard feed and minimal housing, their only inputs being permanent pasture and neglect in equal measures. I'll put up a kill sheet next week.

These were some in June

These would have been Cogent or Norbrook tripple mix.

Very interesting I brought these up on the beef price tracker thread earlier. It will be good to see how they did.

thinking of putting a few British blues this year on our jersey crosses. Some of the herefords are coming out a bit small and don't really bulk up too much.Wondered what to avoid, and should I just put it on the more friesen ones?
My dad and I did this on jersey holstein crosses and the calves turned out very fresian looking calves. We had a very good pedigree blue bull and the strain on the cows wasn't worth it Angus suited our crosses alot better and much easier calved and the calves were worth more in the mart sold as drops

Did you use a white bull also a proven ai bull would be much better for calving ease than a stock bull

What are the latest hot tips for blue bulls, especially for the smaller type of cow?

Look at Genus’ NewPole Kyoto/Kudos/Kowtow or any of the NewPole Harriet sons coming online - she’s a serious cow, the stats from her sons over the past few years at big finishing units are at the top of the graph - she’s also had embryos purchased by BBG in Belgium - she’s very popular !

Also any of the Greystone bulls would do a similar job

We bred a 3/4 blue bull out of a bluex dairy cow - ordinary Friesian dam’s dam, sire was a full brother to N. Edward, on for Semex. That crossbred heifer was given as a present to Phil’s son, Rob a few years ago by his late Granddad Regger so kept purely on sentiment - she was bred to one of the NewPole stock bulls running with dairy herd, N Haarlem and produced a pretty decent bull calf which was going to be steered except Phil had 40 Jersian heifers he needed to get in calf, no money and no time to AI that lot so the xbred was duly sent out to do the job over the winter. I admit I thought they were nuts but we’re some 15 in so far calved down, every single one unassisted. The calves aren’t going to be world beaters but live calf, easy calved dam, what’s not to like! On the cows, NewPole Morgan Freeman’s calves have been arriving for the past few months, no hassles, very shapely and making good stirks. For those that can be arsed to look it up on here or who remember, Morgan Freeman is the full brother to NewPole Lomu, subject of much controversy on here . N. Harriet is maternal sister to their dam, N. Felicity, so plenty of evidence to suggest that the family is one to look for. Or ask your Genus rep for sons of NewPole Just A Minute, again out of Harriet’s sister, Felicity.
