Bore hole water

Hello, just drilled a new borehole and the water has a high magnesium, iron and manganese level. Cows not liking the bitter taste
Is there any way of filtering these minerals out?

Big blue particle filters, 100micron, 10 micron and 5 micron here. I'll put some pictures of our setup later on. We use our water for the cows and for the robots
Already using it for all the livestock, have done for decades. But want to use it on the parlour and bulk tank, so think it would need filtered. Trying to cut down on the mains water bill which is around £150 a month.

👀👀 150 month? We spend that a week trying to keep dirty bore water clean enough to wash the parlour. No mains.
Filters are extremely expensive. We only want to clean 1000 liters a day for tank and parlour.
I would guess return for you, bearing in mind you have mains would make filtration a non starter

What on earth is in your water to cost that? We have high iron and manganese levels and wouldnt cost us much to keep clean

We've got a particle filter on it currently and using a UV filter for previous borehole but new one has alot higher mineral levels
to do it properly is going to cost you £10k. You will need at least 2 pumps, 2 tanks, 2 filters with backwash and an air pump. Whether or not it is worth it depends on usage and what it is used for. Whereabouts in the country are you ?

We put our system in about 12 years ago for about 12k iron, manganese and UV treatment the borehole was already in place. Put about 60,000 cube through it since minimal annual running costs.

Just out of interest before we did bore we were on mains for 6 months, waiting for the big bill to come
What can I expect, avg 30,000 a day

Got all the filters and mineral screens in place for the parlour wash down but need to do cows which will need alot bigger equipment

80p per cube off the top of my head, so about £4.5k roughly

On this subject how long do people’s bore hole pumps generally last ours seems to be 2-3 years before it needs replacing that’s 180 cows plus say 60 followers roughly

Manganese is a barsteward to get out without spending ££s on filters & backwash systems.

You have two choices:

a) Don't bother but you will bung up anything with a restriction in the pipework such as ball valve or pipe size reduction. Not impossible but would need to flush system through with peracetic at least every 6 months otherwise you'll end up with a black ball of blockage

b) Spend around £8-15k on filters, substrate and timers depending on usage

Personally, I'd go big bore pipe and 6 monthly flush
