‘Worse than half-baked’: Johnson’s food strategy fails to tackle cost or climate
Labour says leaked white paper suggesting more fish farming and venison ‘borders on preposterous’

@delilah , do you still suggest we should see the Green lobby as our ‘friends’?
Yeah. See, I haven't actually read it yet, just posted it last night but I glanced at it and the 85% bit stuck out like a sore thumb.Dimbleby:
“Careful livestock farming can be a boon to the environment, but our current appetite for meat is unsustainable: 85% of farmland is used to feed livestock. We need some of that land back.”
To grow what?
even more veg to be disced in coz no one wants it? More potatoes to be sent for stock feed? More berries to be left to rot coz there’s not enough pickers? I don’t understand what alternative FOOD sources he wants grown.
Unless of course it’s just a smokescreen to free up land for greenwashing……. But they wouldn’t do that would they?
bunch of c-units.

Now more than ever. The interface between farmers and the environmental movement isn't represented by Greenpeace but by Sustain. Which bit of the quote in that article from the Sustain chap do you disagree with ?
The meat consumption thing is such a minor part of this issue as to be pretty much irrelevant. It is seized on by farmers, greens and the media as a lazy way of creating conflict.
edit:
If our business folds, it wont be because the Government has issued guidelines on how many grams of meat folks should eat each day, but because of a lack of local, appropriate scale abattoir capacity.
Sustain members are working far harder on this issue than are the NFU and AHDB (who are, in actuality, working to make the situation worse).
That makes the environmental movement, more than those we pay subs and levies to, our ally.
The folk “in charge” at the moment are little more than a joke.Yeah. See, I haven't actually read it yet, just posted it last night but I glanced at it and the 85% bit stuck out like a sore thumb.
If that's the standard of research, understanding and consideration that is going into these policies then I really do worry about the human race. I'm embarrassed to be human.
So they’re going to change the planning rules in order to release more land for fruit and veg production.
What are they suggesting, demolishing housing estates?
The whole thing appears to be complete nonesense, but what are the political alternatives?
Sorry, I still remember Vicki Hird from Sustain making regular comments in interviews that we needed to drastically reduce red meat consumption to help with emissions. She's no friend!
People like Dimbleby making such rediculous claims should really look at the facts...Dimbleby:
“Careful livestock farming can be a boon to the environment, but our current appetite for meat is unsustainable: 85% of farmland is used to feed livestock. We need some of that land back.”
Who?If folks really want to get bogged down in the meat thing, it is worth remembering that one person, and only one, sat on both of Mr Dimbleby's advisory panels.
Who?
im not wanting to get bogged down in the meat thing, but as a veg and potato producer I just don’t see where the extra demand for my produce is.
I thought the same. Reference to more poultry workers but thats not going to be much help when increasing costs of production will lead to a reduction in supply as units are mothballed.Who will pick all the extra fruit and veg?
