Bovine Tuberculosis in the South West of England

That’s me. :)

And the OP has started five (?) previous threads offering the same or a very similarly worded link.

The gist of the question posed was ‘would the solution of more Approved Finishing Units be the Holy Grail / solution to get the SW of England to TB free trading status?’

On one of these threads, I answered a very brief ‘No‘ and didn’t proceed to waste ten minutes of my time filling the survey in.

I could have pointed the OP to the past research, some done over 100 years ago, some more current and some corrupt. To 538 Parliamentary Questions on the subject of zoonotic Tuberculosis and to reams of research, both in GB, Ireland, Germany and the US.
But I’m too tired....

Hi @egbert .
The original posts had an executive summary (see link I posted above) which indicated that those who completed the 10 minute survey, would be interested in achieving TB free status for the South West . Wouldn’t we all petal? But the title then posed the question, would this be achieved by investing in more AFUs?

Futile IMO, So I answered ‘No’ and clicked off. ?

Apparently data shows that in the SW counties of England, less than 5 per cent of herds have not had a herd restriction in the years preceding that FoI question. Apart from being an appalling statistic, that’s an awful lot of hermetically sealed AFU boxes for all the cattle involved. Dairy as well as beef. And of course ignores documented upspill from ‘wildlife’ into pigs, sheep and companion mammals especially cats and camelids.
My time could be better spent, I felt.

No answer from the OP, but a repeat of the thread, multiple times.

I would add that in most cases, if anyone wants help pointing to research into zoonotic TB, then if I can, I’ll give it.

Matt.
