Bracken

Used some asulox last year and I'm very pleased with it, I'd say it had 99% control on a area that was 100% bracken.

Also did a steep with round up, but through a boomless raindrop nozzle, control was probably more like 70%.

Scary stuff bracken, I remember digging out a small veg garden and taking out one if not two barrows of roots, thick milky yokes like underground rope.

I do notice on my own farm where patches had been killed off with Asulox the odd frond coming up again. Either the ewes or the lambs seem to get to it before I do with roundup. Am keeping an eye on it.

I hear positive things about a license being granted in Ireland this year as well.

I've always found it very good on bracken; when did you spray July or August?

It works well on docks as well;)
When Asulox was first released as a dock killer I remarked to Dad that it might do something with bracken as well as they both had large root systems. Two years later it was approved for bracken. Pity the approval for docks has been withdrawn.

Good news! We're good to go. Haven't seen any bracken yet, but I will soon be examining last year's areas to see what the regrowth is like. Last year was the first using Warrior additive.

Snap! We started using warrior as well.

Not sure if we're going to use any asulox this year, got some biggish areas to do but I doubt that particular landlord will be ok with a boom sprayer, will probably borrow a weed wiper and use glypo

Pretty well all hand work for me I'm afraid. I've just bought an atv front mounted 5' wiper from Davis Tractors so am going to see where I can go with that. Try it on the field boundaries where it is trying to creep in and rush and thistle of course..
I started using a hose reel with the atv sprayer last year and wish I had done so years before! 25M, so I am going to try a 50M extension.

looking forward to seeing results here. Used the weedwipe and did some bracken early with glyco and then later with glyco, then some real thick, tall stands with asulox.......

Asulox should be applied when all fronds have fully developed, but before they have started to harden off. This way you are getting the best coverage and the plant is still actively growing and translocating the chemical throughout the plants.

Initial control may not be very good, and the above surface plant may not look too different, but the following season regrowth should be significantly decreased. Depending on the amount of bracken, it is possible that a follow up treatment may be needed.

Bracken not only reduces grazing areas, but can harbour ticks- and therefore cause health issues, and the roots can also damage any underlying stone features/buildings/monuments etc...

By all means try it but don't be surprised if it don't work.
Friction losses in small diameter pipework are very high, it might not come out the end never mind at the right pressure.
Won't know til you try of course. Best of luck.

I've 80 meters of garden hose attached to my quad sprayer (lance), works fine. Works much better if you can park the quad higher up than where you're spraying. I'm going to get some proper "pressure" hose for this year, as the garden hose does expand and contract which is bound to lose me some pressure on the lance. Taps on the hose are a good tip. A tap on the hose and jubilee clip at the tank will enable the operator to remove the hose, drive off to refill the tank without winding up the hose, then reattach and continue spraying.

It was hearing about your experience that made me give it a go. Certainly works here as the pump and pressure sensor keeps up with the lance, intermittent pumping. Didn't work in the beginning and very disappointed until I found that the hose had kinked right inside the reel when I was first winding it on.

A reel of hose is comparatively cheap and will get used in other situations if unsuccessful.

Mine wasn't on a reel, just FYI.
I've mounted the reel on a tray sticking out behind the rear carrier of the atv and just behind the sprayer tank. It has a watertight joint in the centre of the reel so it is pressurised all the time while I pay it out or wind it in.
I'm not sure how to use the new longer reel, although I haven't bought it yet.
