Bracken

If the chemical (Asulox) was applied at the right time and correctly, it is possible that no follow up may be needed for 4 years.

I'd agree with that. Had some very big patches of bracken when I came here. Sprayed them all with Asulox and knapsack and it's all gone in one year. Just do the odd stray bits that are left in different areas every year to keep on top of it. Have just done this years spray amongst some young trees I planted. As has been said timing is everything with Asulox (not before the Royal Welsh Show they say round here). Asulox also works well on docks but isn't licensed for it.

Just bought ATV sprayer with 5ft boom which I will mount in the pack of the pick up and attach the boom to the tailgate and see how that works.
I do not have enough bracken to warrant anything bigger

Now that approval has been withdrawn for ulv application, all my work is with an atv mounted sprayer with a 25M reel of hose to the lance. A 50 litre tank does a 20M square and I can get 3 tanks done in a day if I don't have to go too far for water. Next season I'm going to try having a front tank as well.

Are you using a single nozzle or do you have a boom on your lance? I bought one of these last year which speeded things up a bit- http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Knapsack-...617342?hash=item281e3711be:g:UfwAAOSwPcVVo~NL
I usually use it with three nozzles when using the hand lance and five in not so rough patches where I tie it on a batten fixed to the back of the quad

It's still happening, but I imagine cost is one problem.

Also if everyone's environmental agreement is like mine, the powers that be want the bracken broken up but defo not eradicated, so it seems abit pointless to get the chopper in to attempt to spray bits here and there.
You would be surprised at how inexpensive it is.

There are quite a few crops it used to have approval on, or still does via emergency approvals around Europe and the world

In my situation I think a boom would be too unwieldy. I try to get above the patch I am doing and using the longest jet or spray the lance is capable of, work back and forth from further to nearer. If the sun is out I can judge by the glisten what the coverage is like, bearing in mind that a half litre, one tank, must go on each 20M square.
I have ordered a new suction filter as I think I am losing pressure because of partial blockage.

I believe its major use is sugar cane plantations. I wonder what it controls?
There is a highly competitive grass weed called itch grass that it controls. Think asulox is pretty much the only thing that controls it, so it is always used (good job it has emergency approval[emoji1])

My current approach is,

Pick a area to spray, push down a path every 6 m (very approx)

Then using a one sided boomless nozzle- 8m spread all to one side- on the end of 50m of hose, go down each path spraying, ideally with abit of wind to help.

Using glypo

The biggest restriction is where I can get the tank of spray to.

Would asulox be any good against Japanese knotweed, I wonder?

Well, that's the 2016 campaign finished. I see from my records that I was still spraying on 19th Sept last year. This year I was scratching for green patches last week in order to finish up. Last years photos show how green it was compared to this year.
Last few weeks I have been able to examine last year's work closely and I believe that the Warrior additive has made an enormous difference to the effectiveness of the spray. One place I visited which is surrounded by trees and normally send the dogs through when gathering so never get there, I just stood there with my mouth open wondering where all the bracken had gone. I keep a photo record of work through the years and I am definitely forcing it back as Dad did before me. The challenge for the future is the areas at the top of the farm that are so difficult to get to and take so much time to get there. They amount to about 5 acres and I am seriously thinking of calling in MDair in 2018 when the enviro scheme has expired. Not sure if I could get effective follow up treatment done tho' since I am feeling my age more every year.

Wrapped up here on Saturday, did a few acres with glypo and raindrop nozzle.

All the bracken on south facing slopes is brown now from the dryness

Landlord has offered to buy the asulox if I apply it next year on about 10acs....... result!
