Brambles removal

Hi

Just wondered if the removal of brambles around the edge of the field falls within the same legislation as cutting hedges ?

Or is a prohibited under the not disturbing nesting birds legislation.

Using the 8 tonner to rip out big patches of bramble is most satisfying

Land rake - I love using it, hence no brambles on these parts.

Piles burn well when dry too!

I think that depends on the location. When they are 3 m tall, it's hard walking on stilts!

Just spray the bottoms and watch them shrink.

We've got a field with a river/stream through it that's gone scruffy with brambles and willows. Taken care of the willows but what about the brambles on the river bank? I guess spraying is out of the question?

Trouble with spraying is the dead stuff remains giving the perfect environment for re growth.

Rip out the growth then spray / graze or top young shoots when they come back through

Can you use it close to hawthorn? I've got a coppiced hedge that we've been digging them out, but it is hard work.

Try to keep off it, it gives it a shock but it does recover.

I wish all landowners were so anti brambles. Some places I graze are more bramble than grass...

Again depends on location but have found sprayers with rear fold up booms are great for this kind of job.
Drive round edge of field with machine folded up. Couple of sections switched on blowing a mist of spray over the fenceline and jobs a goodun.
Grazon does a great job on brambles in June, does a good job on hawthorn if you go slow enough and want rid of some of them too

I have one hedgerow that is about 500 meters to go it has to be 80% brambles
I like blackberries but not that much so will rip them out and then spray

I would be tempted to spray first. Make them a lot easier to handle, actually they break down really fast afterward.

I wondered the same thing. But they are not hedge, they are not trees and nothing nests in them, so I will be going ahead and doing them as time permits. But then I've no potential payment loss to worry about; it might be a bit different for those that have.
