As had been widely expected, Theresa Villiers has been sacked as Defra Secretary, after just six months in the role.
Mrs Villers issued a statement confirming her sacking, after meeting Boris Johnson on Thursday, as the Prime Minister reshuffles his Cabinet. She said Mr Johnson told her she needed to ‘make way for somebody new’. Before succeeding Michael Gove in the Defra role, Mrs Villiers had served for Northern Ireland Secretary.
Mrs Villiers, who failed to connect with the farming industry during her time in the post, said she was ‘deeply grateful for having the opportunity to serve at the highest level of Government’.
The big question now is who will replace her?
