Hi I have a Fiat 450DT tractor and have noticed quiet a bit of oil breather pipe. I could under stand a bit but it seems alot more than normal. Any idea as to what causes this or how to fix? thanks in advance

Hang on a minute... more details needed ... what oil are you using?
Is it overdue for oil change?
I thought those tractors will do very high hours if used and maintained properly

Check you have not put a modern high quality oil in it, often older engines prefer older types.
Cheers. going to try some nice thick oil and new air filter and cross my fingers for a bit of luck. hopfully that will slow it down. not worried about a little bit of oil leakage - keeps the dust down just not to good on the wifes concrete

Hi, Im In New Zealand mate. i haven't had tractor for long so haven't oil change yet. That is on the list for next week. Yes when i brought the tractor i did so because they are bullet proof. its not like it will ever do a full days work while i own it so hope to come up with a fix or a patch. Engineer by trade so may get creative with a catch can and back feed it or something. Crossing fingers for new 30 grade oil and new air filter

Is oil filter inverted?
If so it's good idea to fit new filter with valve to prevent oil starvation when starting
Good idea to
Thanks will do. Think i will just replace all filters and rebuild injection pump etc all at the same time as there is a small leak there also

It is a legendary FPT engine.. the correct oils are only a suggestion from the manufacturer, they will run on sludge if you really want them too 😂

3 cylinders don’t like heat soo quite possible that the piston rings have been done in after a good heating or the block is being starved of air.

Is there much much smoke or blow pass coming out of the breather?

Hi, na no smoke and not really that much pressure if you out your finger over it either. No smoke just a little bit of blow pass

Take the oil separator canister off that's bolted to the side of the engine. I don't know what's in there, but it's designed to separate the oil and keep it inside the engine while venting blowby pressure, so if it's fallen apart inside, then it will leak more oil without more blowby gas volume. I think it seals to the engine with a simple rubber seal, like a squashed o ring, that could crack and leak the oil out and run down the side of the blowby tube and drip the same place.

It shouldn't be too hard to remove the cover on the injection pump and replace the seal or O ring in there, it could be grooved also, and not hold, but probably just the seal. no need for a full rebuild unless you want to.

Hi All,
Thanks for all your reply's. I'v done an oil and filter change with a 30 grade oil and also made sure the air filter is clean and breathing freely and given it some hard running to hopefully allow rings to free up from any carbon. So that didn't work fully but did help. The amount of oil breathing has reduced and does stop when it gets warm. However when engine is cold blows out about 1/4 to 1/2 cup of oil. still really hard to start without some start ya barsteward.
I'm thinking its time to pull it down and rebuild pistons and maybe bores. Is this correct or is there something else you recommend? Is there a way to "dam" up the breather some more to allow oil to feed back in whilst warming up? Once tractor is warm it runs like a dream. I suspect that it has had the help from a can to start for some time but it dosen't have that rugged Ether knock that they get yet so hopefully not to much damage has been done

Just thinking out loud - even if the oil and breather and all of that stopped the blow bass etc why is it still a pig to start?

The oil separator won't stop the blowby gasses, but it might stop the oil leakage. Don't know what to make of leaking so much oil at startup and then decreasing when it's warm.

I'd want to do a compression test, and pop test the injectors, then look at timing, and if that doesn't show a reason, then the injection pump might be the culprit for hard starting.
