Breeding ewe sales-outlook

Thought I would resurrect this old thread again as the month ticks on and the lack of forage and thoughts turn to how big a breeding flock to run through the autumn and winter.

Could be some cheap breeding sheep about, this yr...

Ah yes quite a few ewe hogs would have been killed. But I think a few will be thinking we will just run 50/ 100 less this Autumn/ winter and see how we get on. Brexit uncertainty next yr etc too.
Oh what do I know! Just my thoughts on our own farm, it’s looking like another year of survival mode and getting through it!

The yearling market should be booming as so many were killed but I can’t see it being much higher than last years prices. I can see older ewes being worthless - or I hope they are!

Hope your right but with the high lamb prices this year not so sure.
Talking to a livestock dealer today and he said lots of people cashed them in in the spring!

I’ve spoken to several (older) farmers that have/are planning to sell all the ewes as culls as the lambs are weaned. Last winter was the final straw for them, all of which had nobody following on and had had a guts full of soldiering oninto their 70’s.

That said lots of potential breeding shearlings must surely have been hung upon this Spring’s hogget trade, including plenty of those that would normally have been kept as replacements at home. As a result, supply of breeding shearlings must surely be tighter, so the only question is demand for them....
What lamb prices do over the next couple of months, and where Brexit negotiations appear to be going in the weeks running up to the female sales, will set the trade I reckon.

I'm planning to go to the Exeter sale on Tuesday. Have my ewe on a few lots but don't need many.

Think there's about 7,000 ewes booked.

But will today's high ( IMHO )new crop straw price ,corn for ingredients in cake and the forage/ drought situation have a negative impact on the breeding ewe price ?

Or is it a case of good lamb price so far including youngest breeding stock, culls holding up,higher losses in the bad weather in the spring giving greater upward pressure on prices for replacement ewes to just stand still on numbers?

Your thoughts please ....
