Livestock has doubled, ways and means of keeping mechanised without spending a fortune on new stuff.
you stock boys take a fair hammering at times tho.
twice the amount of graft compared to us pure arable lads.
Dad changed us to arable 20+years ago & it did suit us to be honest id never go back now.
Huge respect for the stock lads tho its a tough job.
Keep in regular touch with sheep prices & its very up n down aint it.
Dunno about the cattle side of things really only had a handfull here when i left school & had nowt to do with them.
spent the last 30years learning the arable side & feel ok about doing that now, if it only gave better returns than it currently is.
The world needs a bloody starving coz food is for nowt compared to so many other things.

Does make you wonder about the country.....plenty say they can't afford to pay any higher food prices.....yet the obesity figures for the country suggest people aren't short for food.
oh aye & there's probs 3 times as many take away eating places as there was 10years ago even.
they just don't realize in a lot of cases the takeaways is twice the price & god knows whats in it compared to buying decent home produced food & cooking it yourself & then of course knowing ex-actually whats in it.

Maybes its a home/school education thing that needs major addressing i dunno... :scratchhead:

you do also realize we do follow the likes of America but are a fair few years behind them in this respect..
some shocking sites about our high streets i'll vouch for that... oh & before anything thinks am obese ive been the same waist size since i left school & that was a few years back in the late 80's @ 34"
Far too many younger ones playing video games for hours n hours & then just eat junk all the time & it seems to follow them into adulthood unfortunately.

Well I dropped my prices 3 years ago and have kept them their.
The city has been pushing the value of the pound making manufacturing in the UK uneconomic and they have much to answer for. We have a two speed Britain. I am convinced manufacturing will return as imported goods get dearer and farming will benefit in the long run.

I think that your right on the smaller less complicated bits of kit but sadly I think that most larger uk companies will see the cost of imported goods going up will simply allow their prices to track up and if there is profit to make they will claim it- I doubt that there will be any benefit passed to farmers in the short/medium/long term by buying british
without naming company names I priced two identical bits of kit, one European and one british built - both top brands, both good dealer and service/parts backup, both do exactly the same job and euroland machine was ALOT cheaper.
on this basis the £ has got to slip a lot vs the euro to even get to a level playing field

think it will become a case of picking and choosing whats best on the day/week
--
with 10000hr warranties just around the corner this will also allow us to keep big expensive bits of kit for longer than 6000hrs has until now
8000hr now easy enough to get so 10000hr will be within reach shortly and not before time.
compared to say buying say a Scania or a komatsu excavator the agri industry has a lot of catching up to do

I cant comment on your recent purchase but rip off Britain springs to mind. I used to swap from BOC to Air Products as they would give you there best price to change then kept upping it, the same with steel suppliers.
Yes some machines don't travel well and I am lucky to fit in that category as there are very few suitable European sub-soilers, However my big trailed 6.5 mt 13 leg sub-soiler would set you back £36,000 and that's not peanuts.
Our dealers don't help over hear as they don't like dealing with independents because of upsetting there larger suppliers who can offer them a complete range.
Arable implements from the USA don't often suite are conditions and things like trailers and muck spreaders can be to expensive to import. Europe is big and have some large manufacturers making there equipment which are hard to compete with but as time goes by more will be made hear, we do have some very good specialist.
Yes guarantees need to get better which is why 7 years ago I extended mine to 10 years which includes damaged wearing parts.

I wonder if post brexit peoples view of machinery replacement might have to change. Why is it a necessity to change tractors, combines, loaders etc so regularly? regular maintenance and a good dealer back up should keep these machines running reliably for at least 10-15k hours and once the hp is paid off there should be money left over for the odd repair. These odd repairs should with maintenance, a good driver and modern manufacturing be a rare occurrence. Is it just ego and vanity that makes people update their tractors at 2-3k hours?
