Brexit matters

My father worked hard all his life to buy a farm and within a few days of him doing so his father died.

He got to show him but the relationship and experience was never to be.

Life is cruel.

Fortunately I am now semi retired from farming, but I have to say in or out of Europe "It will be your own efforts that ultimately effect your farming destiny". It is so easy to blame politicians etc for one's own misfortunes in all aspects of life. "YOU AND YOUR DECISIONS MAKE YOUR DESTINY".

I would like to "like" that and agree with it but I can't really.
A simple example. My brother had a small hill farm in Wales, he invested all he had in it and building the business. Which was a sheep flock and herd of cattle. It looked a good plan and viable although of course was never going to make a fortune.
The night before he took his first home bred bull store to market, john gummer, with the best of intentions, went on telly, feeding his kids burgers.
As you can probably guess, he took the animal home (I actually went with him as at the time we were on a rare visit there) and basically worked for sfa for the next, oh, nearly ten years before finally giving up with the cattle. At least he didn't have all his eggs in one basket (as my wife was just pointing out this lunchtime that we do!) and the sheep kept the wolf from the door. I would say bse broke my brother as he was never the same again:(

While I have every sympathy for your brother, I fail to see the relevance.
It was the EU banning our beef for 10 years that caused the problem. We had stringent measures put in place while much of the rest of Europe kept the reported figures low and avoided any ban. Being 'In', certainly didn't seem to have any advantage.
Ultimately luck is the deciding factor for all of us. Macron was clever to put himself in the right place, but very lucky that things unfolded in the way they did.

I concur.

For some reason you appear to have been the main responder on this thread - rather unusual since you also appear to retain your responses until you have something extra special to coment upon.

I also note that the OP has made one post only. A troll?

I'm not sure about a troll, I simply thought it was a good post and wanted to support it.
In hindsight, I apologise if I have replied too much and/ or put any others of from replying.
It is nearly a year since the referendum, and it has only been in the last few weeks that brexit discussions have grown up into an intelligent debate. Maybe there could be some more responses to this thread now?.....

It seemed relevant to me to this ending?
". "YOU AND YOUR DECISIONS MAKE YOUR DESTINY"."

I must admit since Austria, holland and France have kicked nationalism back in the bin where it belongs I had forgotten about brexit and I agree my post probably wasn't relevant to brexit. Sorry I will do better in the future.

I appreciate that which is why I said that ultimately luck is the deciding factor but it is our own decisions that put us on the path of destiny.
I genuinely like you and your posts but I do resent your need to call me a nationalist [and racist by association]. I very much want to be part of a coalition of European nations. The attempt to assume ever more power and control over a federal union of nations is the biggest risk to our future peace.[IMHO].
I can think of wars and bloodshed all over the world due to people fighting for independence. As you well know, many republics have split into seperate states and are better for it but I am not aware of any example of seperate nations uniting successfully.....unless the UK is an exception.

Italy
Germany
Czechoslovakia (had the 7th largest world economy)

Germany was a re-unification, Czechoslovakia was split into 2 countries and I have no idea about Italy.
I know it is possible to happen peacefully, but the main point is that all over the world, people are looking for more autonomy. I'm still not sure that there has really been a successful unification of countries while you have helped highlight how many choose to split given the opportunity.
You can be sure there will much effort in making sure no other EU country is given the opportunity.
A final point......Jean-Claude Juncker made much of the French election showing great support for the EU. This blinkered attitude ignores the fact that it has pushed a third of the french vote to go to a far right party just to indicate their unhappiness with the current situation. Until they appreciate they are the cause of the increased nationalism across the continent and plan a future more in line with the common man rather following their own little mission of world domination, the divisions will grow ever deeper.
