Briggs and stratton Mower engines

Have a 12 HP engine on my Husqvarna ride on. Tonight it has died sounds like fuel starvation.
Tank is 30% full and fuel looks clean
There is a little plastic fuel filter which looks clear , but is only 80% full.
there is also a strange looking pump ( it is listed as a pump on the website) with 4 fuel style lines coming in / out. 1 goes to tank 1 to Carb, the other two I am uncertain as to where they end up. do these pumps fail often? or should I look elsewhere
Anyone know a good mechanic near Bury St Edmunds?

They use the crankcase pressure to work the pump, the filter 80% full is absolutely fine. Have you checked the spark? Best way to check pump is take pipe off at carb and turn the engine over, fuel should be pumped out at a decent rate.

Spark plugs can give up the ghost randomly, and operate intermittently, have you got another spark plug off a machine thats working fine to test with?

Another thing could be a vacuum forming in the tank, will it start then slowly cut out over time? Had a Honda that would cut out about 10 mins after starting, after checking everything multiple times realised there was a slight release of vacuum when I cracked the petrol cap. Small breather hole in the cap, has run sweetly ever since.

Pull the pipe off between the carb and fuel pump.

Crank it over and quite a lot of fuel should spurt out.

If it doesn't you've a blocked fuel filter, blocked tank outlet or perished hose.

Otherwise clean the carb float bowl.

Check it has a spark, pop in a new spark plug, I've had a few failed spark plugs this year, they give funny symptoms.

If it's overhead valve pop the rocker cover off and check it's all in place and moving.

Vic Keyton at C0ckfield is a good guy for mower repairs.

First thing I would check is spark plug, pop it out, clean and earth against the engine, turn engine over and check for a spark, might be Roland or his wee brothers have been chewing a wire somewhere.

I have an electric start machine (not a mower) with a 13.5Hp Briggs and Stratton. I actually read the manual. (OK, I was bored!:(). I was surprised that it said to check the valve clearances once a year. So I did. That made a big difference.

I also fitted an in-line manual pump, one of those bulb types off Ebay for about £6 that you squeeze to get the fuel to the carb without relying on the vacuum pump off the engine. Both have made a tremendous difference.

for the valve maintenance its easy i think its 3-5 on intake and 5-7 on exhaust , and as for the fuel system the pump is a diaphram where that may have worn out and needs to be replaced and also when istalling a new pump u have to renew the hose from the oil filler to the fuel pump , also may be a little water if possible in fuel i had that happen to mine, or she may just need a good carb clean
