having decided to use an ai chap, for the 4/5 weeks we use ai a year, and not buying a new flask, suddenly doesn't look quite such a good idea, no idea yet of ai mans view, he is self employed, with a regular round, a case of don't work, no pay.

Another pear tree bryster heifer this morning. Number 6. All been lovely strong calves
Only problem is theye all look identical, like to recognise them without numbers.!
Does all this strength in animals mean extra milk have holstein jerseys they definetly lack strength and while the get thin in autumn and are hard fed its milk out the gate which pays the bills.

Nope 100% disagree with milk out the gate it’s all about margin on that milk not amount.
I agree about margin but if a cow lacks strength but goes in calf gives alot more milk what advantage apart from holding body condition to save a bit of feed is there.

Margin is king, replacements can cost more than 2 ppl. Holding body condition is directly linked to fertility so its is possibly the easiest way to improve it but the small milky, fertile cow is financially and environmentally the best, just there are not many!

Yes thats my point a small high fertility holstein cross jersey is a super animal but does require extra feeding ive seen plenty of fat cows not being fertile on the other hand ive been suprised how fertile holstein jerseys are given the low body condition score but they prove me wrong anyway just for comparison im going all out british friesian this year

small fertile cows, can be very profitable, milk and c footprint, but b awful on cull and calf price, but you have to put that against the cow lasting longer, and reducing your replacement % The Br Fr falls somewhere between the two. There are some very good hols, on the SCI now, but do they need more than grass, to produce the goods ? The main problem for the hol cow, was she was bred to produce milk volume, and didn't last, the answer to that, was to serve hfrs with hol, but easy calving, which in turned, led to 'narrow' chested cows. Now the trend is going the other way, are we going to start putting our xbred hfrs to easy calving fr ? and if we do, will the same happen ? I don't know the answer, but, till we get enough numbers, we will x hfrs with jersey, and cows with a more 'solid' frame. Once numbers are there, we will probably x the hfrs with angus or hfrd, as was traditionally done. Full circle ?
