save some money for the surrey/sussex cows that will come down in july time, some very nice friesian cows, usually i/c, as well, price this year might be dearer, but can get a decent lot of cows from those farms, they really have their breeding sussed out, the ones we bought in milk, last june/july, calved nov, still av 30l/day, and we didn't have the best of food rations last winter, nor have they dropped out to grass. Fresh milk is always the dearest, those cows safely back i/c are a better buy. It's great to see someone entering the dairy game, with so much enthusiasm, just don't get carried away,
We do have an 11th calver from them, bought last year, sub £500, calved jan, doing 38litres, and fit to go back in calf, that age of cow, seriously profitable, esp if it had been home bred !

Bought half a dozen pedigree 3rd/4th Ayrshire’s for between 1200 and 1400 last 2 years as friesians too dear, hopefully after this year will have enough from our own. They look like red and white friesians as well traditional type

What is your forecast margin per cow/acre/whole farm? That will tell you how much you can afford to pay for cows.
Show your workings.
How long do you write a cow off over?
Could you give an example just to make sure what I think you mean is what you actually mean? I'm assuming income per cow per year minus costs per cow per year? Then times that by 4 years which is the length of time I would want a cow to stay in the herd on average?
