British friesian bulls

If you were a Holstein herd Ayr calving. Used to house cows through summer and lows out. Embraced the grass system out end of Feb to late Nov. Split block autumn and spring. Is there room for minus stature Holsteins calving in every year? Or is it a pipe dream and need to embrace Irish genetics or Frisians? Which one x would embrace 8000l 4.5% bf 3.5% p. Calving in every year on 2 t of conc off grass based rations. I don't think cross breeding for me with pedigree cows.

Two points,

1) a lot of the Friesian sires marketed in the UK are from grazing systems, for example Kirkby milk the cows on robot but use a paddock grazing system with non-return gates @Friesianfan you graze your cows too dont you

2) E.B.I system will create a flexi-cow, a cow that during low milk prices can be an efficient grazer and make milk from purely grass and in times of higher milk prices can respond to the feeding of tmr and concentrate to step up to a mark just shy of some holsteins.

More than happy to talk either route over with you - 07989 219 686 - [email protected]

My cows are out grazing most days of the year ( when not grass , fodder beet or kale). Managed every day for the last twelve months. My cows have to work hard but they still look after themselves and last.

What I'm saying is that if I look back at all of my culls and deaths and add how many lactations they've done and divide by the number of cows it's about seven lactations that they've done. I suppose that doesn't include any youngstock before they calve. I suppose I have got a small herd for these days at a 170 cows but that's more than enough for me!

Ah okay they are different things my mistake got myself a bit confused I think! Thought you meant average lactation for cows in milk! Your average lactation for cows in milk must be around 4 I should think? So just as many 1st lactation as 7th.

Thats not how averages are worked out though.
Thats why i deleted my post i got my mean and medians mixed up.
What i was trying to say is that for the average to be 4 you don't need as many in 7th as 1st because the ones over 7th will push the average up.
So
6 1st=6
3 7th =21
1 14th =14
Total 41 lactations ÷10 cows =4.1 lactations

Like the others have said and herd ave of 4 lact doesn't mean there is as many in 1st as 7th.

Bought 20 straws sexed Joseph today off the back of this thread almost @Friesianfan good work ;) even though I can't use it til start November aha:banghead:
No Joseph yet but after recording yesterday had a quick tot op of the pd+v's.
Chad 15
Chad sxd 8
Inch no 1. 2
Topman 3
Quentin 3
and only 17 holsteins. So beware the threads this freisian experiments well under way. Must add Chad seems a heavy hitter considering this is cows only not including heifers.
