See on their FB page and on match ploughing page of FB it is postponed until next year, same venue.
I guess it's the "paying" public that is the issue. I can go to a pub but not a ploughing match.
Guess with such a large event it must be a nightmare to try and organise in light of the virus.

It’s the right decision in current circumstances. Life’s are more important than ploughing! 3 pubs shut already due to outbreaks won’t take long for it to spread again!

I think there is a realisation that we have to accept a new 'normal' as this virus is going to be around for a while yet and we have to work towards returning to 'normal' life, looking at risks and doing our best to control rather than eliminate completely. I say that as one who is considered in the very high risk category at the moment - I have to be very careful but life must go on, learning to risk assess on the move - usually thinking for others as well as yourself.
I thought Dave Chappell made a well thought out and reasoned argument last night for why it should go ahead and I commented as such.

I thought exactly the same. david Chapple saying all the right things.

We can leave it as long a possible before we cancel etc.

Then 24 hours later the SOP cancel? Surely he would have know that this was going to happen?

Can see lots of other matches now cancelled.

Sadly think we can write this autumn off, don't know of any staffordshire matches going ahead, Brailsford have not decided yet, but with such a large show as well can't see how it can be held.

We can have pubs and shops open. Even 22 grown men running around after a football.

Yes responsible grown men are not given the option to go up and down a field in a straight (ish) line for a few hours. If they choose to do so?

It would be very simple to write a set of guidelines for this to happen.

I understand that organization of a match can be an issue, especially if those organising it may be in the ‘at risk’ category, so yes, matches may be cancelled.

What I don’t understand is why they are cancelled so early? For them to have already been on the SOP site would have meant a venue has been agreed.

The option of a match may well be there, however the problem will not be the ploughmen, it's who are you going to get to run it, judge it steward it, man the gate etc, in these circumstances we find ourselves in today, and uncertain times ahead,

I am very disappointed in the post on Facebook from DC, this was nothing more than a point scoring post,
And yet he in his position would of known what the outcome was going to be,

D C had it right, they even admit it by saying the intend to run a qualifier later, perhaps next year! Things will be much the same then, this virus is here for ever, will have to be lived with. Strange how the local car boot sale is opening in August, but we cant have ploughing matches. Ah well subscription will be cancelled, no need to be a SOP member, nothing to go to!

That will be another match you will never go to again Harry,

DC voiced the opinion of many - one can either give in and say ‘can’t be done’ or start from the point of ‘how can we do this’ . DC pointed out several options on various points that should be a start of a discussion of what is possible. It is also a fluid situation- in another month it may be deemed ok to have spectators. An event could have been organised that did not in involve spectators but with a plan ‘b’ to be enacted if things change.

Yes, and for more than one reason, they are 1, still too far, 2, no interest, 3, poss driving licence problems as its due for renewal in 2022.
By doing this, they have shown themselves to care less about their event than a local farmer cares about his boot sale! They have also rendered match ploughs, certainly in my class, almost worthless, and yes I have an axe to grind here, having spent about £1800 on improving the plough, only to find there is likely to be no where to use it! And dont mention "Next Year" the virus will still be around, and the present restrictions will still be relevant.

Happy shroud waving! I dont know about north of the border, but down here, pubs are much more restricted for space than ploughing match fields, so infection chances would be many times greater, and three pubs shut, out of how many?

My answer to this is in the first paragraph of my post above

For a ploughing match, most of the people listed are not essential, gate would be closed, stewards would be able to keep plenty of distance. Competitors could judge, doing everyones plot except there own, Points could be passed to the office by phone.

Yes pubs are open, but aleady 3 have had to shut because of track and trace only 3 days after opening, the major problem here is the majority of competitors are in the most vulnerable age group, and as one trustee of a ploughing society told me, if they held there match and somebody died from the virus he caught at there match could he be sued, not worth the risk.
