I used to travel regularly to Morocco and it’s a very different place to Western Europe. I always remember a government official telling me how he always bought a live chicken to kill at home. When I asked why he simply replied that was the only way he could ensure hygiene etc. Having seen some of the stalls in the Souk, especially one selling fish, I could see his point.

Put me off eating fish in Casablanca.

In Marrakesh I saw a fish stall next to a poultry stall. The sh1t from the chicken cages just fell down onto the fish. Went veggie for the rest of my stay. (Fantastic place-would go again)

In Hong Kong they were filleting live fish in the Aberdeen fish market.
In Vietnam they sell a dish called gasping fish, which is deep fried while the head is kept out of the oil and still live while the diners eat the flesh

In Tehran they were selling sheeps heads from 200 litre barrels in the open air with flies all over them.
In Libya we had a BBQ but the meat was struck before and after cooking.
Nobody seemed to die of food poisoning. Least of their worries.

My doc reckoned the human body evolved to eat stuff a whole lot worse than a bit of off meat. Humans evolved scavenging meat particularly brains from animals left behind by bigger carnivores so we can stand a bit of roughage. A health visitor friend reckons the kids from the roughest dirtiest houses never suffer allergies and are generally healthier than those from clean homes. We once had a poisoned dead rat in our hot water header tank. Only noticed when it started to disintegrate and got some fur in the washing up bowl. Theoretically we should have died of something but we didn't.

Anyway the local abbatoir had to close because the taps were brass and not stainless steel. Was the last straw for the old boy that ran it.

Biggest danger is mutant bacteria from overuse of antibiotics and biocides.

Thread title reminds me of Brian who nearly killed the chicken of Bristol, from Monty Python days.

I actually think that's very true.. the cleaner we get the more susceptible we are.

I actively encourage my kids to get absolutely filthy on the farm... we all need some bad bacteria to keep our immunity up.. Drives my clean freak Mrs mad.. I normally get home looking like I rolled around with the pigs.. ( which I do )

I can understand her, life it's cruel, all the more for animals. I love animals, I feel mercy for them, but when you do it for feeding your family - forgives them all. But I'm talking about violence (killing is also violence), not trading them. They were traded from the beginning of history, there's nothing bad in that. You have too much of something and you don't use it - you sell it. Why shouldn't people do that? It's not a sin. Even the Bible doesn't say anything about that.

When i was a young boy ,i used to go with my grandparents to Brigg market.My grandfather would go to the cattle market and my grandmother would sell her homemade butter and her eggs.The chinese chaps from the restaurant would buy live chickens and walk off down the street with them.That was just how it was.

That stupid cow had obviously flown there with its attendant carbon footprint and then attempted to disrupt a culture she had no grasp of. Maybe a month in one of their lovely prisons would teach her a valuable life lesson. Namely, she has the right to an opinion but no right to inflict it on others.
