Broadcasting spring corn.....

This is written in the hope that it will induce drought like conditions...

But anyway, anyone regularly broadcast and harrow spring corn in?

I have barley and oats to go in, and the spring tine is going to be the only machine that will go, if it carries on anything like this.. I know, I know, there's a long way to go yet, but just thinking ahead and all that....

Any thing to watch? Ideally obviously a nice warm fine seedbed with good consolidation and a light rain on the forecast and all that.

Many thanks!

Did winter and spring cereals with a Krm spinner and vaderstad carier when we split the farm about 20 years ago. Technically you should not used dressed seed.! But it worked well and yields were on a par with drilled stuff. Trials were done by Velcourt I think and looked good at cereals back then. Vaderstad did some very good books about those sort of techniques back then, I do not know if you can still get them.

Not always the case. The Carier had small tines a couple of rows of discs and a press and if you got it right and the conditions were right it almost looked like drilling.

will all depend on the weather over the following month

if it comes dry it would be an utter disaster

a complete gamble

also remember you can’t broadcast dressed seed

If you can’t get it in properly in the spring I should forget it really rather then mess around doing a half arsed job.

No experience of broadcasting spring cereals but barley in general doesn't like the concept. Also worth remembering that a few years back with a wet spring, many of the late-April sown barley crops were the best some growers had ever had.

Last year was about as wet and late as it’s been recently. It was a bloody awful spring
