Your Location may help or not.
Some Councils it's a money making racket and all their rules regs and costs are crazy and detrimental to the simple requirements of businesses.
Here for example new signs from the Council got to be bi lingual, and demographic, meaning bed for hotel, cup and saucer for cafe etc etc.
So a simple sign become huge and so much info , drivers can not make out all the details .
But they will stop you from putting a simple sign up everytime.

Cross your local councils palm with silver & they will provide brown signs.

For brown signs to our village off the main road the council charged good money, which from memory we got nearly all of it back as a grant, from the council. Just have to grit your teeth and play the game.

We did ours through the AA, yellow rather than brown obviously but not too much hassle. Has to be directons rather than an advert, ie. Dimbledale Farm Shop and Cafe rather than Stej12's Shop. Same line as Superstore rather than Sainsbury's.

If the road is managed by highways England, ie an A-road or motorway, look here:
But be warned as £££
A single sign may cost £8,000 to £20,000 to design and install if sited on a single or dual carriageway, depending on the size of the sign.
