BT phone book entry.

Had a letter from BT re our details in their phone book. It claims that our 'free' entry was now to be charged at mid teens of £'s per month, no need to do anything as it would start automatically, I called to opt out and was advised to keep the cancellation reference number as there was a probability payment might be taken, I almost binned it without opening.

I'd ask to be removed from their phone book after that, just about anyone who wants me already has my number, probably my mobile.

I was charge to have a phone book entry. It just appeared on my bill. Accounts couldn't cancel it, so spoke to the phone book section who cancelled it but couldn't credit my account. So back to accounts who said they would credit it next month. So i read them the direct debit guarantee and got my money back there and then.

BT are a shower so are Openreach. Keep all records of all contact with them.

Similar here, took £16.99 for 3 months! Rang to complain (no letter received) got it cancelled and all money credited to account. There was no resistance to the refund so I guess many people are in same situation.

Check your bills. There should be a law that says customers should be required to opt in to any service not opt out.

BT just keeps trying it on with its customers to try and fleece them for more cash.
I nearly got caught out last year after joining up to its much trumpeted FREE BT sports package then quietly quietly they made it £20/m. It was only reading about it on TFF alerted me to ring and cancel it.

Is this a residential or business listing?
Or an advert under a heading at the front of the book?

This sort of thing is one of the reasons I don't like paying by direct debit.
But it was the direct debit guarantee that got the money back straight away.
It shouldn't have been taken I agree.
Locally I've heard of extras added to ST water bills that have been paid by check and taken 2-3 years to get back.

I check the bill when it comes. If I don't agree with something I tell them to have another go, or I write out a cheque for what I think should be the correct amount and send it with a photocopy of the bill with my amendments explained. I would not like to give a DD mandate to BT or to a utility company. In theory there is protection there for the consumer but in practice I've heard plenty of stories of, say, someone wanting to change electric company when the company has made them be a couple of hundred pounds in credit. It then takes months on end of banging your head against a brick wall and going back to square one before you get your money back.

Also, given the hecticness of my life, I know fine well that if a bill were being paid by DD I would not scrutinise it thoroughly and I would be victim to the sort of semi-scam that BT etc like to try on from time to time. Especially as some make it difficult to find your bill; I left one mobile phone company because they stopped sending out paper bills and wouldn't email you a bill- you had to set up an account to download and view bills and it was all hideously complicated. Sitting down to pay bills means I go through the items I'm paying for.

I think this is what these companies want to happen, no one has time to check the invoice etc. Like the insurance renewals etc that suddenly jump up by a couple of hundred quid, there will be a percentage of people who just pay up.
