Got an old Strimech bucket needing the floor done , what thickness steel would people recommend, thinking 6mm? Going to be used as a second bucket for dung etc save washing the grain bucket, thanks for any help

Reckon 6mm would be good. Get a weld on edge predrilled to take a double sided bolt on edge. Last forever then if you're scraping over concrete.

Bolting on an extra edge just ends up with you pushing stuff around rather than into the bucket. Tbh decent buckets aren't that dear. Ok if you can weld an edge or bottom in yourself, but if not get a few hundred in a sale before its goosed and buy a new one.

I agree about buckets not being worth spending too much time or money on but looking for a project for evenings and there’s no pressure as we already have a decent bucket

We're pretty hard on our bucket edges. Bolt on edges are harder than weld on and last a lot longer.

I think 'pushing stuff around' might be more down to the driver to be fair but each to their own ;)

Finished the bucket , used 8mm for the floor .
Used an extra length of 8mm for the cutting edge , I know it will wear down very quickly but I’ll just buy a cutting edge and weld on underneath when it does

I wouldn't. Depending on how you use it you might find the outsides wear faster than the middle (it's where all the pressure is) and when you go to fit your new edge you might have to bow it or space the ends to fit.

easier to weld a new edge on while it's all straight.

If you've got an arc welder and are handy with it weld your new cutting edge on and buy some hard facing rods and get some weld built up on the underside. You'll get some life out of it then.

All the welding was done with an arc welder so I will probably do that

I did one of these a few years ago with 8 mm for the floor I used 7018 rods & I can appreciate just how much work is involve.

I just used 6013 as that’s what I had and have been doing it in evenings and around other jobs hopefully should last a long time now
