Budget Barns?

What is the cheapest way to build a small barn / store?

I could do with something about 30ft x 20ft, planning permission is required in my case, so I'm guessing a height of 12ft would be easier to get through.

I'm open to suggestions on any materials, its just got to be watertight and fairly secure... and cheap of course!

I've been thinking about flat-pack pre-made ones, but are they actually cheaper?

Am I likely to be able to re-erect a second hand unit with ease, or are they usually buckled?

Just make sure the 'cheap' part is in the floor ie, no concrete just crush. Don't do cheap roof timbers or cheap roof materials as the cheap bit will creep up and bite you very quickly when it snows or is windy!

I had a look round Portal Power's yard recently near Kenton, Stowmarket. They may be able to help. http://www.portal-power.co.uk

Yes as @multi power suggests, we can provide you with a very cost effective steel framed kit building. We can do a fully inclusive kit with purlins and cladding with all of the fixings, plus we can also do you a planning drawing for you to submit with your application.

If you would like any more info please feel to PM mo or email [email protected] or call.

The cheapest build would be out of stock timber (15' 7"x3" or 20' 9"x3") I built a 40' wide shed using an upright in the centre out of a pair of 7"x3" timbers nailed together, used the same for outer legs and a 20' 9"x3" as a rafter if that makes sense.

You could just build your own

Mine is 12m x 5m full build details in my blog

Costings in the last part but could be halved by using second hand materials or telegraph poles etc

Very informative blog there, and finished result looks good!

I've PM'd Phil, and I'll see what his prices come back like, and go on from there. I have considered building it myself, but its whether its actually worth it once you add up all the materials and then factor in the time to do it all from scratch.

We're on putting up a cheap lean to pole barn, 60x30, with some used roof sheets from eBay.
So far costs have been 500 for roof sheets, 800 for new purlins, 300 for the poles, 100 for fixings. Guess there will be another 500 for side cladding & gutters.

To be honest I never priced second hand steel, though I did price new steel..which was way to much compared to the poles. For this particular project we feel poles have been the right way to go. It's just going to be for machinery storage.
