what I am having difficulty working out is if we can spend all these billions on rescuing the economy after or along side the last few months of this virus why didnt we spend / invest it before on ensuring we kept our manufacturing/ chemical etc industries instead of importing everything for the last 20 years cos I cant see where we are going to get the money to pay down these borrowings other than me and that if they took the lot wouldnt hardly pay the debt the gov have taken for me and mine
Makes thatchers slash and burn policies look even more ridiculous

Word is £500 cash handouts for spending in shops for all adults. £250 for children. In an echo of the "child trust fund" free money to give it straight to investment funds, I *hear* it's easier to prop up the high street by giving us all a voucher to use on the crap we've figured out we don't actually need, rather than subsidise the jobs.

But rampant inflation will cure the debt problem for both country and borrowers, it just screws those who have saved cash for a rainy day

But the figures show that a) very few have cash saved outside their homes, and that b) pension cash is overly invested in rent seeking IE shopping centres, office rental, government bonds, rather than actual productive assets.

Nice to see Boris getting on the "needs of the many" bus as done right it will keep labour out for 25 years.

Would be an excellent idea if the crap being bought was all British ??

Quite so - I have a dormant pension with Standard Life, been remiss with it and left it - recently noticed a fair %age of it is 'invested' in a UK commercial property fund. Feck!

That's the flaw in Trumps "make America great again " plan,
No good if the product is the same but alot more money.

Speaking to an estate agent, phones ringing off the hook with people wanting out of cities and towns!

The two we saw today said they had lots of viewings for all of next week, but all those wanting to move out of the cities need to sell their current place and they could well find that even if they can find a buyer the price they can achieve will leave them with negative equity.

Small hobby farm near me in west of Ireland purchased over the phone last week by an English couple. Neither had ever been to Ireland don’t have any connections. Estate agent told me they just wanted out of London, to go as far west as possible, without going to America. There’s a run down old farmhouse on it, so I guess they can go from there.
Two houses sold in the village sight unseen also to Londoners. Always fancied west of Ireland as an escape. Covid and crowded city, just made their mind up.
The Irish migrated to the English cities for yonks.
Are we about to see the reverse happen now?
Covid has many, many long term implications for all places and people!!
