Build a small grain hopper - tips please

Thinking of making a small hopper (doesn't need to hold more than a ton or so) to feed an old sieve cleaner we've got. Looked at a couple on ebay etc but am quite restricted on height etc. Also width, as would need to be wider than the loader bucket.

So if I made one myself would galvanise or plywood be the best option? In either case, what gauge would I need? Any other tips welcome, thanks.

I’d try and repurpose something that’s similar in shape and size - maybe an old fert spinner body?

Thanks, yes definitely a possibility - the thought had crossed my mind but I don't have anything suitable here and nothing immediately obvious googling etc. Maybe something will come up at a farm sale or somewhere

Thanks, that's useful to know. That's another thing I was wondering - for the hopper bottoms of a Symms bin or similar - do they use standard angle iron? As the angle between faces of a pyramid (and a hopper is essentially an inverted pyramid) are less than 90 degrees aren't they? Or is it not enough to worry about?

No, MattR is right, the internal angle between the interior faces reduces as the depth of the hopper pyramid increases. The external angle is only 90 deg when the walls are vertical.

I’ve made a couple of metal ones not as easy as you think. They both turns out different to what I was thinking of at the start . the angles will give you a headache and the 4 pieces need to be bigger than you think.

Went in the scrap bin, was all rotten,

I made one once, a trailer mounted one with four outlets, with two slopes to each corner, which had a bucket filling slide. Firstly, I made a (or several) scale model out of card, which helped enormously on the final build.
