Did anyone see the programme on BBC2 @The house £100k built' ? That was a very interesting watch, the chap certainly had a very nice house for the money. I think its a series so more next week.

The house for £100k last night. A Shropshire farming couple, pulled down the old brick and stone farmhouse and built a timber frame house on the site, they went over budget, but still not finished. Liked the scene of him disc cutting the top off a Propane bottle to make a lamp shade. BOOOOOOM!

why did they need such a big house for just the two of them?

toying with building a house at home for me, how cheap can it be done? i have a digger, i can mix cement
a friend in n ireland recons he can build 2100 sq ft for 60k
With money as cheap as it is and a free plot I'm guessing
Push the boat out as hard as you can you wont regret it and over 20 yrs the money you would have paid out in rent will build your dream home
Frame itself can be quite reasonable it's when you get inside the money goes think long term will work out cheaper

When we built our house 18 years ago we were 50% of cost to get it watertight, and 50% on rest. We had the philosophy of building as big as we dare afford and not spend too much inside on fancy fittings as they can always be added later. We still had an oak kitchen and aga, and a large inglenook in the lounge, but bathrooms were done on the cheap side. Its fun but hard work, and as someone mentioned earlier the VAT can be a useful nightmare, speak to your accountant first as 20% is a lot of money. Good luck.

Just watched it again tonight and at the very end they gave out a warning about disc cutting gas bottles, saying it was very dangerous and unless you really know what your doing etc etc don't do it! BOOOOOOM! As you say.

wonder what building regs would think about pallets for walls
well they allow celcon type blocks and they are effing useless things work of the devil. notice lots of builders round me are using concrete ones again and putting thicker insulation in the cavity to reach the U value
