Building small loader from Land Rover parts ?

Maybe I should just get a girlfriend to keep me entertained, but while sitting on the tractor today I had this bright idea. Building a small articulated loader from Land Rover parts ! I haven't thought this completely through yet, so don't get too technical. What I want to know is are the rear axles on say a LR series 3 the same ratio as the front ? Meaning, can I use two rear axles together ? I want to use the engine, transmission and two rear axles on a custom made chassis with a pivot point like a front end loader. Maybe shorten the axles a bit to make the whole thing narrower, if needed ? And no, I not drunk - yet .

I wonder why Landys are so freely available , and 3 ? Ton dumpers are so hard to find ?
Unless you want to make a rod for your back , the dumpers the most logical.

yes they are the same ratio. (4.7:1 I think) changed to 3.54:1 with the Range Rover and 90/110

Why not use a landy front axle in the rear and have it rear wheel steer?
Easier to make a rigid chassis rather than a pivoting one, and it'll probably turn tighter too.

In fact, buy a landy 109.
Shorten it, flip the diffs to give you 5 gears in "reverse" and fit an old loader to the back.

The problem you will have is gearing ok for forward but will be slow in reverse a pal of mine made one but used transit rear axles (diffs in the middle) with a engine and box out of a dodge 50 pick up then we slipped Perkins with a shuttle box two speed forward and reverse the same speed and it transformed the machine

There was a few similar machines built on various American forums, mostly articulated but a few using ex Jeep Dana steer axles.
Some were based on plans for a design called Cadtrac.

There was a few nicely engineered ones built on a forum called Machine Builders Network, not sure if it's still active.

Bloody hell .
It's a lot of work for something that isn't likely to be a good working versatile tool .
Once the steering is sorted it will be on to hydraulics and pivot points / bushes for the loader .
It's a good old bit of graft for something that is already mass produced and usually available at various prices and states of repair .
