Building strength for those built like sticks

1) Sort your back - get advice from a physio about when/if/how you can train.
2) Eat - more calories than you burn, try to get 1g protein per 500g of your bodyweight.
3) Train - Take up a strength training programme (weights are much easier to progress meaningfully on than bodyweight, but bodyweight stuff is still good if you are determined not to go to a gym). The programme should have an element of progressive overload (increasing weight/reps week on week etc). You could try 5 x 5 or similar if you are a beginner.
4) Progress - get stronger.

Don’t be too hard on yourself.

You can do all the gym work, strength conditioning etc that you want and be strong for your size but if you are physically small then you simply will not be as strong as someone who is significantly larger.

Having reached the ripe old age of 38 my body is now pretty much buggered from constantly abusing it. Final straw was last year when I burst 3 tendons in my right arm from lifting things I should have been using a loader to do but stupidity reigned instead of sensibility. They are now so damaged that at some point I’m going to need tendon grafts when they go again.

By all means, keep fit and active, especially if you enjoy it, but work smarter, not harder. Your body has to last you until you pop your clogs and you won’t be thankful when it starts to fall apart. I wake up and go to sleep every day in pain and I wish I’d not done some of the stupid things I have. Getting stronger for work is generally not such a good idea and nobody will thank you for destroying yourself, least of all you.

Great great advice. Put life into perspective.

Watch out for ruptures as well if over doing it, men are more susceptible for them especially as you get older, and they can turn v. Serious.

  1. Be willing to be a beginner every single morning ,
  2. Your smile is your logo . How you leave others feeling after having an experience with you becomes your trademark,
  3. Stay open-minded . Things aren’t always what they seem to be ,
  4. You might think it’s normal to be plagued by negative emotions throughout your day, but life isn’t supposed to be that way . You can live your life utterly free of hurt , upset , worry , & fear, & exist in continuous happiness,
  5. Life is short . Focus on what really matters . You’ve to change your priorities over time,
  6. It’s not enough to express a positive attitude . You must also remind yourself why you’re grateful in order to achieve a deeper effect,
  7. Resolve to do something every single day that moves you towards your major goal . Build this activity into your daily schedule . You may decide to read a specific number of pages of a book or engage in some excercise for some period of time . Whatever it’s, never miss a day ,
  8. If you’re surrounded by peppy , optimistic , highly motivated people , you’ll feel more motivated yourself,
  9. Calmly responding to the person trying to trigger you is a self-care ,
  10. You inspire yourself & others by being your authentic self today & everyday,
  11. Just Chill.!!

The best way of lifting something heavy is to get someone/something else to do it. Where that's not possible you need to work out mechanisms to make this sort of work easier, Handling systems/processes of working/equipment/timing of work etc. I know it's all easier said than done. I have done my back a few times and have to think about this stuff a lot.
I don't know how long you have been at it. If, like you say, you are doing a lot of physical stuff, your body should adapt to that. It sounds like you could maybe do with changing your diet and don't underestimate the power of good sleep. Best of luck

In more exciting news, the key to building some muscle is to get a small job lifting things. Given my usual work involves ironing, sitting in a sprayer, sitting at a computer, and sorting my childrens social routine, im pleased to say that my little job helping at the chickens has got me to shift about 7lbs in weight. And slightly bigger arms. It doesnt seem like a lot, but stacking pallets of eggs is equal to about 160 "reps" of 10kg. Plus the walk to and from work.

Last night I ran 3km. This morning I was like death warmed up. But still, progress and not costing any money to do it.
