Bullying in the work place

I never had much to do with the police until recently (it's OK, I'm not repeating my story again!:)). I've since learned that Phil Gormley, recent Chief Constable of Police Scotland, was suspended for 'bullying' and has since been forced to resign. Did I hear that several other senior officers are now being investigated for the same offence?

Of course, I couldn't possibly comment as Scotland's 'open and transparent' policing means we are not allowed to actually know what has been going on! But it is my guess that sometimes bullying is not only necessary but desirable. The firearms officer who handled my case blatantly ignored codes of conduct in spite of being repeatedly reminded. But then perhaps these days that's bullying too? Some people need a good kick in the ass to get them into gear, but that's just my opinion.

Bullying can be defined as any UNREASONABLE or UNHELPFUL critisism directed either to the person being bullied or to another person in their presence.

For example, I've experienced it with my then boss shouting at me in a team meeting about a problem that was out of my control, inferring that I was not up to the job.

It's a nasty thing that if not dealt with, can destroy a person's self confidence.

Report it to the bully's boss as soon as possible.

I worked for someone who was never out rude or insulting but constantly spoke down there nose to you in a patronising and condescending tone also expected the unachievable
There was never anything to put your finger on it was just an unpleasant environment enough so to make 4 people quit in 3 years out of three employees as it was such a depressing environment
What would that have been classed as as no actual insults

I worked on a farm in Hampshire for 7 weeks, the manager was a pr*ck! I was the 28th member of staff in 12 months and there was only work for 1 member of staff and the manager at a time.

There’s banter etc and then bullying, thankfully I havnt seen much of the latter but I had a work colleague who thought his job was in danger whenever self employed or part timers came in to help so he was never nice to them, prank calls middle of the night etc and all :/ now he’s a complete loner with no job!

Tell your lad to stick with it because meanwhile it’s still money at a time of year that’s quiet for most people so FT work can be rare to come by but meanwhile look elsewhere!

When I was at school many years ago there was a bully who picked on many of the smaller kids. He was a big lad and nobody dared to report him or do anything about it. Teachers new he was at it but had no evidence.
One day in the sport lesson it was football. He was at it big time hitting and tripping a few of us.
Unfortunately he hit me and I went over the edge and hit hard on the end of his nose. You know when you get one of those nosebleeds that pours out? This was like that! Poor sod was devastated and humiliated. He had to go off the field and to the nurse. Teacher had a wry smile and said "oh dear has there been an accident?" The only time I have been a hero lol.
He never did it again to anyone and was as nice as anything after that incident.
Not sure that helps your situation;)

I think this bloke suffered with never working anywhere bar daddys farm and never doing anything he didn't want to his complaints where ridiculous and between that and the snide remarks it was depressing but don't know if it counts as bullying

We tend to think of bullying as being someone throwing their weight around, but it is usually much more subtle than that, especially in the work place. It can be as simple as messages not being passed on deliberately, so you look incompetent, sly looks and overheard remarks to much more open bullying. It can be physical but is usually mental, putting someone down constantly etc.
In one job, I uncovered a huge scam that was costing the business thousands, done by a staff member who was a long term friend of the boss. I told the boss. My life was not worth living at the business from then on, and I left voluntarily the following week. It all blew up a few weeks later and the business closed.
I have also employed staff who were very sneaky in their bullying. I took them aside and very gently asked them why they thought they had to do it, why were they so unhappy and what could I do. Having it in the open, so to speak, it stopped.
Interestingly, a bully is usually not a strong character, and if confronted, usually backs down. Kindness can sometimes help "sorry if you see me as a threat of some sort, I would like to learn from you to help the business" can turn it around, but of course it depends on the bully and why they do it.
A bit of background research can play dividends @roscoe erf - has he done it before? How do others on the workforce see this person? Does the boss turn a blind eye or is completely unaware? Good luck, years of building your lads self esteem can be undone with something like this.
