Bumper first cut

We’ve Brought a great first cut in, that with second cut we won’t have room for first cut. I see some struggling for forage south of the border, we will have 200 acre or so that could be taken for silage. Obviously depending on second cut produces, I’m trying to plan what I’m going to do with our 200 potential acres of third cut. If anyone is interested fire a pm. Very few silage fields over 7 year old resead

Advertise on here and facebook? Maybe the grapevine will put you in touch with someone?

Might be worth investing in bales with a view to selling some.

I'd be waiting till nearer the time and see how the summer pans out. I know its different for you guys on the west side who can grow grass till the cows come home.
We are a heavy farm and can probably take a drier spell better than most, fortunes soon swing around when it’s wet when the drier farms don’t make a mark and we are wading in mud ? I agree tho never know what kind of second cut we will get. It was to rain next weekend which would have been ideal but no rain now for at least 2 weeks. Hoping our watery slurry in the lagoon will give the grass a decent drink

Hate third cut bales!! Done it and they turn to shiiit! Either silage or earlier sheep grazing for the winter, anyone know anyone needing sheep earlier sheep wintering
Why are 3rd cut bales sh!t? I don’t like bales but they are good feed when clamps are full. Also I’d be very careful you might be feeding silage by July at this rate

Didn’t touch last years third cut and still using last years 2nd cut. Ran out of silage a couple years ago so we’ve been paranoid about making plenty, but we are potentially at the stage of not fitting it all in. Never know tho. I don’t like making too many bales as they are expensive and too wet when it comes to September time at 3rd cut time, they sink and are never a good feed third cut bales. 1st and 2nd cut are grand but 3rd cut we try to avoid

We find it the opposite clamp the wetter leafiest cuts and bale the 3rd cut it’s stalkier and dry also easier for us as the tops are off the silage trailers for combining at that point

Fill up the clamps first and then assess.
I giving up on forage budgeting now till I've actually got something to budget ?.

There is a little bit of North/south going on with reference to 3rd cut bales. So I can see where supercow is coming from.
What i do for bales is leave an acreage of second cut and take it around 3rd cut time. Does depend what you need it for though. Mine usually is for drys, trying to milk of them this year though ?.

Have u lads down south been getting flash showers? We’ve had some serious showers up here, south Scotland. Washing the slurry and fert in good. I’m thinking of making a late second cut and forgetting about third cut, unless I can secure selling third off the field. High fibre shot second cut should compliment the first cut fingers crossed
