This is an appeal on behalf of whoever your local Retained fire crew are. I'm minded as we've had two whole days with no rain that burning season is upon us. Please all those hill farmers, shepherds gamekeepers and landowners who normally burn the above at this time of year and onwards, dont't, not this year. As a Retained firefighter we can get a lot of calls to hillfires, usually they are well controlled, sometimes not, but the general public do not know the difference and whilst we are supposed to be shut away these fires will still be seen and reported in which case the Fire service are duty bound to investigate even when they have been phoned in by whoever is carrying out the burning beforehand. This means we will be part of a crew in close quarters driving to and from the scene and meeting other crews from other areas and whilst we will do our best to avoid close personal contact,it is inevitable and precisely what we should be trying to avoid to combat Coronas spread. We then go home to our families and towns or villages. As a farmer I'm well aware of the benefits of a bloody good burn, just have a wee think at this time before the Swan Vestas come out though.
